Pitbull attack (UPDATE)

A pitbull just came into my yard and attacked my little schnauzer. It really tore her up good. my son dove on the pit and smothered it with his body so it would let go of his dog. It took great restraint to not shoot this dog. After every thing calmed down, my wife got a leash on it and we found the owners up the street. I had my 40 and was going to shoot it if it attacked my wife or son. Dog got returned to its owner and they are going to pay us for the vet bill. Just glad every thing turned out alright. I am really glad I didn't have to shoot it.Still shaking.PS, no police involved. The owners didn't know their dog was gone. It broke a really sturdy chain. Nice people.

The dog owners came by tonight and paid us for the vet bills. They also apologized profusely and brought my wife flowers and our schnauzer some treats and a stuffed animal pitbull for her to chew on. We all had a good laugh. They are really nice people and we ended up having a few drinks with them and some good conversation.. Glad we met them, but wish it was on better circumstances. All is good[:)]

If it did it once, it can do it again. Should have called the cops, they would know what to do with the dog. Don

Hope every thing is OK Oakie. Happened to my dog last month by a border collie. High drama to say the least.

    Oakie,

Some Pits are so aggressive, fast and strong that I would rather try and sandpaper a wildcats * before I would try to jump on some I've seen.

Your son could have gotten ripped up bad or even worse had the pit gotten to him. If you've never seen a pitbull fight, you've no idea how fast they are. Some go to kill mode and are totally focused on destroying the other animal and will try to crush anything they get their mouth on.

I have two bulldogs myself that mean the world to me but if they got out of my fenced yard and attacked someone's animal and they get shot, they're paid for. I would pay for the other persons vet bills and/or replace their pet and hope I don't end up in court to boot.

There ain't no back up in most pit bulls. Your son got lucky this time.

I wouldn't push my luck next time. Get in close and kill the other dog whether it's mine or a bulldog from down the street.. Protect you and yours.

Akita attacked our Min. Schnauzer while he and I were on our morning walk 5-6 years ago. Schnauzer was on a leash. Akita had escaped from a neighbor's fenced yard (he did this frequently). Ran up and blind sided me and attacked Tazz. Tried using pepper spray to no avail. As soon as I reached for my CCW, he released Tazz and ran for home before I could clear leather. Had to rush Tazz to his vet. Large * in his side with very little bleeding. Tazz recovered but still has shaking in his rear leg. Neighbor paid vet bill. I told neighbor "if I ever see the Atkita loose again, I was going to kill him, period".

Animal control was called and picked up the Akita and held him for 10 days. About a year later, the Akita escaped and attacked a lady, in her yard, across the street. Animal control picked him up and "put him down".

From that day, I swore that I would not hesitate to kill any animal if attacked.

no dog that attacks without provocation gets a second chance from me. I have a pit next door, and he has, THUS FAR, been a friendly little guy who only wants attention. I make sure the kids pet him when he is out, so that we are seen as his "friends" should he ever get off the chain. He is a sweet little guy, maybe 30lbs tops. THAT BEING SAID, if he ever gets off that leash, and attacks my kids or another dog, I will have no problem killing that dog.

This is from a guy who owned a 150lb rottweiler that was as strong as they come. Mine was a big baby, but he was also never allowed to be "free",.....just in case.

I was stalked by 2 pit bulls in my yard. You could tell they meant business. I was waiting for the to charge and they knew it. they finally backed off. There is always a lead dog and a follower. All I had was heavy duty loppers. I would have done damage to the lead dog and I think dog knew it. I did not turn my bakc on him. I was lucky.

If you can get your hands around the Pits neck, and choke it down, thats the best way to handle one...that's what we did when hog hunting, and using a pit for a catch dog...

Agreed, the dog attacked, the dog should be destroyed.

boomerang you are right. A dog can tell if you are ready to fight back and he will stay back. When I was a kid I always heard "A dog can smell fear" and it is true.

Glad everything turned out good ( enough)
Pits are like any other animal its all how the owners raise/train them., My cousin had a 80lb pit and 5 sons less the 7yrs old they could do anything to that dog without worry but if you were a stranger ( or cat ) and came into his backyard you were in trouble.

I expect to be blasted for this but All pit bulls should be killed...and many of their owners too; the ones who seem to take sick pride and pleasure in owning these killing machines.

Look at all the bad stories/experiences already posted here on this small forum; just a small snapshot of what happens all the time around the country. I see no sense whatsoever for having these dangerous dogs as pets.

Even so many of the ones who are "sweet gentle pets" seem to go nuts and attack someone at some point in their lives, hurting or killing a person or a beloved pet. Once the damage is done there is no taking it back. How many times have we heard owners say "gee, he never did that before" ? These killers are never worth the risk IMO.

A pit bull breaks his chain and attacks a schnauzer. As this is going on a person pounces on the pit and restrains it with sheer body weight until another person manages to get a leash clipped.

The schnauzer survived and neither person was bitten during this.

    Wow.
