It seems like there's a never ending argument about which is the most reliable auto pistol. We usually only hear about a person's own experience with one particular pistol, along with their estimation of rounds fired. It's not often that we get to hear the results of extensive and well documented tests from an unbiased source on this subject.
I read an article a while back that listed the malfunction rates of pistols tested by the Ohio State Police during their recent pistol trials. They had made the initial decision to adopt a double action only auto pistol, chambered in either .40S&W or .45 ACP. They then selected several different types, all obtained through regular commercial channels, and conducted trials using 10 samples of each pistol. These trials were fired by ten people who fired a total of 12,000 rds. rounds through each pistol. The ammuntition used was Winchester 180gr SXT in the .40's and Speer 230gr Gold Dot in the .45's. Any pistol exceeding 36 malfunctions was dropped from the test.
These are the total number of malfunctions per 12,000 rds. experienced by each pistol:
SIG P226 4
SIG P229 5
HK USP40F 14
Glock22 13
HK USP45F 26
S&W Sigma40F 29
S&W 4053TSW 23
Beretta 8040D 11
S&W 4056TSW 26
Glock21 45
S&W 4046 32
The following pistols exceeded the limit:
HK USP 45C
SIG P220
S&W 4043
Glock 30
S&W 4586
Ruger 94DAO
