So admit it; who has tried the gangster thing?

You know, when you hold the pistol all-sideways and try to think of a snappy one-liner involving the word "homeboy".

I was putting the silicone cloth to my little Glock following a cleaning, when I thought of a scene from "Bringing Down the House" (It's alright, not great, but a few funny moments) where Steve Martin is pointing a Glock, very similar to my own, at a would-be assailant, and Queen Latifah reaches over to turn his gun over so that it is held in the afore-mentioned manner

So, has anyone actually tried it? Is it simply a style thing? Pointing mine like that (the slide is back, the clip is out, and it's thoroughly unloaded) it seems that it may actually have something on instinctual, unaimed firing. I may have to find out for sure next time I get a chance to go out shooting, assuming of course it will ever stop monsooning.

I've also heard that holding a firearm in that manner makes it more difficult for the ballistics guys to determine where the shooter was standing by the placement of the shell-casings, but that sounds a little sketchy to me.

Not sure about the ballistics part but yes, I have tried it. Felt wierd and too much like the gangster losers you see on tv. A few shots like that and my curiosity was gone.

It's a style thing, by NO means practical. This comes from the same people that brought you 10 lb gold chain necklaces and pants that hang down by the kneecaps. Then again, they seem to hit more bystanders than anything when they shoot so they obviously don't know how to aim anyways.[;)]

Never tried it. I figured that if I ever did, in a confrontational situation, some good-ol'-boy with his gun right side up would put a couple in me before I could whistle dixie.

Being in the military I meet all kinds of people from all walks of life in America. Got a new recruit in from Kansas City, momma's little gangster boy...Seems his mom wanted him to get away from the gangs and join the military before he got himself killed.

He bought a cheapo Makarov one day. We went out in the desert to plink some cans and a bird flew overhead about 6 car lengths out. He pulled up in Gangsta fashion and .....POW.

She fell straight to the ground.

I couldn't of never of made that shot with a pistol.

The gangsta method of firin is more efficient when you have a gun in each hand. I saw some bad movie about bank robbing chicks, and Queen Latifah had the two * gangsta shooting down to a tee.

Nope, I haven't tried it. Although I wouldn't mind puttin' a cap in thier butts. I'll even do it authentically and use black powder! I get SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO sick of them driving by at all hours of the day and night with thier friggin' stereos banging. I love a great sounding stereo but very quickly one reaches a point that is obsurd. For instance, one day I was mowing my yard. I had my portable CD player on and it was nearly full-blast (to overcome the noise of the mower) and some idiot driving down the interstate had his so loud I could hear what song it was OVER my mower and my headset. That IS overkill!

So, for those that have tried it - how does it recoil? Does the muzzle still rise or does it swivel in instead?

It may be a style thing now, but I don't think it started out that way. Most likely it originated from others watching stupid people try and use a gun, when they had absolutely no idea what they were doing. It is probably why so many drive by shootings are unsuccessful.[B)]

Watched a SWAT Challenge competition on ESPN a couple of weeks ago and that is how one of the team members did it while advancing on a hostage situation behind his shield.

Aglore--legend has it that such SWAT tactics (with the guy behind the shield who really has no other way to get off a round) were seen by the "homeboys" and they decided to try it out.

Guys you got it all wrong, this method of holding a handgun sideways allows the gun to be dropped easier. It actually quite old and originated in France.

I think it would be good while shooting from the open window of a car, so as not to scatter brass all over the poor guy in the back seat handing you more magazines, not to mention trashing your vehicle, if the gun is being fired from the passenger side window. Always be courteous though, go back and police up your brass if the CSI bubbas dont get it all.[:D]

5db, I love you. I was going to say that the "gangsters" that everyone seems to be referring to stole that move from the real gangsters, the italians... at least that's what my italian professor told me. appearantly they stole it from the french [;)] But I wouldn't know, I've never even held a gun in my life.

When teaching advanced firearms classes I have students fire several rounds with the firearm held sideways while maintaining a good sight picture. When canted 90 degrees to either side it will cause your rounds to strike in the corresponding direction and low, with the error more pronounced as the range increases.

When shooting without using the sights ("point shooting") the hand eye coordination that allows this stems from the many rounds fired while using sights. All of this practice causes your hand to eventually become used to pointing where you're looking. Changing the way a pistol is held for unsighted fire just screws up the muscle memory you spend all of those hours developing.

The uninformed often cite the low hit ratio of trained law enforcement officers involved in shootings, but you should see the ratio the gang banger types have. In my experience it's in the fractions of percentage points-if you're only counting the hits on their intended target.
