My daughter's dog got into antifreeze....any input
Locust Fork
Member Posts: 32,045 ✭✭✭✭
Her boyfriend is working on my Camaro. The water pump had to be replaced and he is flushing out my system (also replacing the thermostat.) She has a bull terrier and a large mixed breed.
I gave her the number to my vet...they have an answering service for emergencies.
Anyone had to deal with this kind of thing before?

Frequently, dogs ingest items, chemicals or foods that have the potential to be dangerous or even toxic. If you see this ingestion, you may be able to avoid the potential danger by making your dog vomit.
Inducing vomiting should be done only if instructed by your veterinarian. The procedure can be hazardous. We strongly encourage you to contact your family veterinarian or local veterinary emergency center for advice regarding the appropriateness of inducing vomiting for each specific incident. The item or substance ingested, the time and amount of ingestion, as well as the overall health of your dog should be considered prior to recommending the induction of vomiting.
Methods to Induce Vomiting
# Hydrogen Peroxide
Three percent hydrogen peroxide is quite effective in making dogs and cats vomit. You must be sure to use three percent peroxide and not hair coloring strength peroxide.
Despite the label indicating that hydrogen peroxide is toxic, it is safe to give to dogs for this purpose. It is considered toxic since it induces vomiting and therefore does not stay in the body.
The appropriate dose of hydrogen peroxide is one teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight. If you have an oral syringe, one teaspoon equals 5 cc or 5 ml. Once given, walk your dog around or gently shake the stomach area to mix the peroxide with the stomach contents. Vomiting should occur within 15 to 20 minutes. If no vomiting occurs, you can safely repeat the three percent hydrogen peroxide once. If it is still not effective, your dog may need to be seen by a veterinarian for stronger vomiting medication.
Once the hydrogen peroxide is given, it is important to watch your pet so that he does not re-ingest the substance. If there is concern about toxicity, collect and take a sample of the vomitus to your veterinarian.
# Syrup of Ipecac
This medication is frequently used to induce vomiting in children. Unfortunately, it can be dangerous and even toxic to dogs so it should not be used unless specifically advised by your veterinarian.
# Salt Water and Mustard Seed Water
These are other alternatives that have been used to induce vomiting but have not been proven to be very effective. Therefore, it is not recommended to give salt water or mustard seed water for any reason to dogs unless specifically recommended by your veterinarian.
quote:For immediate first aid, and only if you are positive that your dog has ingested antifreeze , try to induce vomiting by giving your dog a simple hydrogen peroxide solution -- one teaspoon per five pounds of body weight, with no more than three teaspoons given at once. This method should only be used if the toxin has been ingested in the previous two hours, and should only be given three times, spaced apart at 10-minute intervals. If your pet has not vomited after the third dose, stop giving it the hydrogen peroxide solution and seek immediate veterinary attention.
You may want to call your veterinarian before trying to induce vomiting, since it can be dangerous with some toxins; some poisons will do more harm coming back through the esophagus than they did going down. Do not use anything stronger than hydrogen peroxide without your veterinarian's assent, and do not induce vomiting unless you are absolutely sure of what your dog has ingested. Also, if your pet has already vomited, do not try to force more vomiting.
A final word, do not induce vomiting if your dog is unconscious, is having trouble breathing, or is exhibiting signs of serious distress or shock. Whether your pet vomits or not, after the initial care, you must rush it to a veterinary facility immediately. Your veterinarian will be able to safely administer antidotes to the poison, such as activated charcoal to prevent further absorption of the toxin, and 4-methylpyrazole, which can treat antifreeze poisoning very effectively if given shortly after the consumption of antifreeze. Your dog may need to be held in intensive care to prevent kidney failure.
Thanks guys.
I'm hoping that she got in touch with the vet.
Most dogs can survive a tablespoon full or two. Anything like two cups and the odds drop drasticly.
You've got at most six hours to get vet help.
Any longer than that and you would be doing the dog an injustice to delay puting it to sleep.
From now on use environment safe antifreeze..
Just started to use that stuff. Only reason I did not use it sooner was I did not know they made it.
I've been down this road, and know how hideous it can become.
On the bright side, you aren't any more than 50% etholine glycol to begin with. Then he's flushing it. Assuming he's got the hose flowing, its dilutied further still.
My Dobie took two quick laps off a driveway before I knew what was happening. She lived to be 15.
Thinking good thoughts for you and your daughter (and I'm betting the boyfriend isn't too happy right now either)

You've got to be careful with that stuff also. It's not As toxic, but can be fatal in large enough quantities.
Should be the same for dogs.
I knew a guy who drank quite a bit of anti-freeze. When I talked to the emergency room doctor he said there wasn't much chance for him.
Turned out he was drunk enough when he did it that he pulled through.
You have received the best of information and advice here on GB. There are a lot of great folks here ever ready to help one out.
I hope that this will end well for all. The best of luck to all of you.
I just can't pay that! My daughter is losing it....I am beside myself.
Right now I am on hold with the vet trying to talk to the doctor to see what the chances are that bowzer makes it without this treatment.
OMG!!!! TWELVE HUNDRED AND SIXTY DOLLARS!!!! That is just the treatment and office visit for today....not including the additional meds he will need later or the other dog's treatment that they don't know if she got into the mess. The second dog is another $400 just to put on and IV and watch overnite.

No kidding....I spent 2 grand on my last adventure at the vet's office.
Small price to pay for my buddy.
This is just crap. I can't believe this costs this much. Never in my WILDEST DREAMS would I imagine that I would be paying this much to a vet today.
Larry is having kittens as we speak. I called him a bit ago to update him and the phone went silent....not because he wasn't speaking, but because I think he was screaming too loud for the phone to process.
vets are a rip off. a dog is a dog...
My dog has risked his life to defend me, how could I not pull out all the stops to save my dog's life?
I just love dogs.
(this is a pic of a dog that looks JUST like him)
He for certain got into it...and is being treated with the EXPENSIVE meds and Bonnie is being given fluids by IV and blood tests just to be sure she hasn't gotten into it.
I would spend that sum on my mutt in an instant.
Same here, and nearly did plus more.
When I returned the next day to settle up the bill, Doc told me he couldn't find his notes.
Know About How to Treat the Dog But A Lady Locally Drank Anti freeze to Commit Suicide And The Made Her Drink RUM Real Rum liquor & Charcoal

Sorry your costs got out of hand, LF, but our animals are worth every nickel.
Clouder..
What kills me about this is we won't know if the dogs are ok or not for a long time....even then it could be something that affects them from now on.
My dog got bit so he had to get stitched up(five or six in the side) and he got pneumonia because of the intubation, at least that's all I can figure.
They gave him some antibiotics for the cut so when he started coughing the next morning I figured the antibiotics they gave me would take care of it. I was wrong. I found out later that they were very weak meds designed to only help stave off infection of the cut in his skin.
I waited so long that he eventually had green snot coming out of his nose and could hardly move.(three or four days)
I took him back to the same vet where they X-Rayed his lungs and sure enough there was fluid on them.
They ever so kindly offered to keep him in the clinic for three or four days at $400 day.
I politely declined, took the more powerful antibiotics they gave me and proceeded to keep him alive by force feeding him organic peanut butter and low sodium chicken broth for two or three days until he could move out of bed.
He even got down off my bed and peed in the floor...as he did it he looked at me like he was in trouble even though he was deathly ill.
I told him it was OK and I then realized that all those * beatings had paid off.....[8)]
I thought I was going to lose his little * but I'm glad that worked out.
I don't even vaccinate my dogs now except for the legally required rabies vaccine.
If anybody so chooses you can get all the other vaccines at the feed store and administer them yourself.
I don't so choose.[;)]
As a side I used to feed strays at the mill I worked at. One day some wiseguy put anti freaze in the bowel I used.
Killed a dozen cats. Somehow my favorite missed dinner that night and was ok.
I was glad I never found out who did it. I might have killed someone. I was seriously so pissed because the creep used the trust I developed with the cats to target them.
Anti freaze poored right on top of the food as if to garnish the tid bits with added flavor. [:(!]

That's a special kind of psycho.
Weren't the cats beneficial at a mill?
If so, the bastige is an even worse psycho.

That, is seriously bleened up.
I lost my boy Merlin to atifreeze poisoning.
He/we went through a year and a half of training for his SAR certification only to have a vindictive neihbor put a pail of antifreeze over my fence.
that's one of two photo's I have left. House fires can be indiscriminate and cruel.

You are sweet. I am ok with having to pay 1/2 what it costs...it is quite the blow and has come at a bad time, but I will recover. I couldn't have possibly paid the whole thing. I just couldn't. That would have been bad.
I can't believe someone poisoned the food you were putting out. That is terrible. This seems like a painful way to die and anyone that chooses this as a way to get rid of animals is sick.
A true *.
