Marines Hunts Drug Cartels in Guatemala
By Robert Beckhusen
The war on drugs just got a whole lot more warlike. Two hundred U.S. Marines have entered Guatemala, on a mission to chase local operatives of the murderous Zeta drug cartel.
The Marines are now encamped after having deployed to Guatemala earlier this month, and have just "kicked off" their share of Operation Martillo, or Hammer. That operation began earlier in January, and is much larger than just the Marine contingent and involves the Navy, Coast Guard, and federal agents working with the Guatemalans to block drug shipment routes.
It's a big shift for U.S. forces in the region. For years, the Pentagon has sent troops to Guatemala, but these missions have been pretty limited to exercising "soft power" - training local soldiers, building roads and schools. Operation Martillo is something quite different.

Or.... we could just legalize marijuana and cut the problem down by a notch or ten.
Nah, can't go doin' sumthin' like that!!! Might put some law enforcement folks or prison guards and such out of work! Think about their families, man! The war on drugs is BIG business, and alot of people in elevated positions are making profits aplenty off of it. Forget that up until the early 20th century it was a non-issue and that prohibition is a colossal failure ( I mean, hello, McFly, didn't work with booze either and created a whole new criminal enterprise - sound familiar?). If it were legal, and taxed, I think this country might be better off. Just my opinion, of course, but logic HAS to enter into the equation sometime, doesn't it?
What? Another damn war we are getting into and we still have a wide open border to the South. Has this government become totally brain dead?[V]
yes, the problem is that the Gov. is simply brain dead. Good and honest though, not corrupt at all. Well meaning and righteous public servants who happen to have very low IQ's.

Just another obama secret war and he doesn't like to talk about it.
Agreed, and his cheerleaders last night at the GOP convention, John McCain and Condi "McCain" Rice were being their usual self reminding Americans that our founding fathers would have intended that we help anyone and everyone in the world whenever and wherever it's needed, because peace really is negotiated from a position of strength. So, now we have another little war in Guatamala.
The article paints this as breaking news that a US helicopter unit has been assigned to assist authorites down there by conducting aerial surveillance of traffickers.
Despite how the situation is being depicted, the fact is that we've had armed personnel assisting with counter-drug operations in the air, on the rivers and actually on the ground down in Central and S. America for many years. Decades, in fact.
What you're seeing is either seriously poor research on the part of this media outlet or they're intentionally misrepresenting things through ommission of information.
Don't get too excited.

Thanks for the input. I'm aware of our involvement in the area where training is concerned, but I simply don't trust our government representatives, to include, those of the past like Condi Rice. They know full well that over two thirds of American citizens want to stop the warmongering and bring our troops home, but they are arrogant way beyond belief. They will do absolutely eveything they possibly can to open every conceivable border in this world to free trade, and that includes starting wars in Syria, Iran, Africa, or wherever, and damning the citizens of this country to hell and back, in order to tear down our country's borders then they will do just that.
(The sequel.)

I hope no Marines get killed in this BS.
That makes two of us Allen. I don't know how long it's going to take the American people to root out the warmongers in Washington, but nothing will change until it's done.
Clear and Present Danger.

The way things were operating down there at the time was of course highly dramatized, but Clancy didn't pull that scenario out of thin air.
It's never been a large number of our people and activities have varied depending upon political climates, but I have knowledge that US personnel have been actively participating in counter-drug operations - in addition to training missions - down in countries down south since back during the Reagan administration.
If I've become aware of this it's damn sure not double-naught secret.[:D]
