Went with my wife's uncle out on the Lake today and caught a mess of crappie and 1 channel cat that was about 4lbs. Let me tell ya a 50 horse mercury on a 16ft john boat will move! anyway the fishing was pretty good and I had a blast. Hoping you all the best of luck this year!

A bunch of guys I used to work with had a fishing party Tuesday and Wednesday. It rained both days and we didn't catch many crappie but we had a good time. We have been getting together since 1972 doing this. We used to stay up late and drink and play cards and B.S. now we can't wait until it gets dark to go to bed. We have some hard core fishermen that make sure we have fish to fry on the second night out. Wednesday night we had about 45 guys to feed. About 18:00 that evening we had three deep fryers going when a big storm came up. Hard rain, wind, hail and a tornado spotted about one mile from us. We waited it out, dried everything out and fried a lot of crappie. Good times!

When we started doing this we slept in lawn chairs then we moved on to pick up covers, small campers and tents. This time we had two motor homes and two very nice fifth wheelers with every option. We were roughing it softly.

Went offshore (about 25miles) to the shoals we call " The Jackspot" this weekend. Water goes from 100 feet to around 50-60 feet. These areas always hold baitfish which, in turn, attracts the larger ones. we trolled some stretch 25's and 30's. Winds 15-20 knots, seas 4-5 feet, but it layed down around lunchtime. Ended up with 15 ocean blues in the 12-17lb range. "chunked" for a couple of hours with some shark rigs I tied out of #19 wire the night before with a whole mackeral on the 9/0 hook and waited. Water is still a little too cold to bring the Mako's in close, but I will be trying again in the upcoming weeks. Tuna will be coming up soon as will the blue and white marlin, then it's on!!!!!!!

Tried some of the Chesapeake bay stripers last week, but the blue crabs aren't shedding out yet so the preferred bait (peelers) aren't available just yet. Should be in the next weeks as well. Good luck to all fellow anglers this season.

My gawd..you guys are hard on a guy. All that talk about that great fishing is killing me. My boat, the POLTERGEIST, is sitting in the back and I'm in here babysitting the grandkids.

I have been hitting it on the way home from work a couple of nights a week. I mainly fish farm ponds and a couple of small rivers in the area. I have been catching LM bass most nights. A few crappies and
Bluegills here and there. There has been too much rain to find the smallies in the rivers...

Northeast Indiana is lake country. There are literally too many to count in the area surrounding Angola, Indiana and of course it's not much further north to Michigan; in fact, Lake George straddles both states. We've got Pleasant Lake, Pretty Lake, Big Long Lake, Lake Wawasee, Clear Lake, Lake Gage, Golden Lake, Hamilton Lake, Lake James, Crooked Lake -- as I said, too many to count. I've been to most all of these. The basic fishing with a cane pole and a hook gets you bluegill (some sizeable) and perch and the occasional bass. There are a few crappie which aren't as desirable eating. Lake George is large and has pike, which are harder to catch (I've never been lucky with my rod & reel, either trolling or casting), and bass, and a lot of catfish as well as the perch, etc. Our best fishing on George was in the evening, which is unusual in my experience. Usually, lighted bobbers are a waste because by the time you need one the fish have stopped biting.

Some of the lakes here went through a period where the fish were suspected of containing impurities. There has been an effort to clean up those lakes. There was a period when I was not quite as excited as I used to be when I was a kid about fishing around here. I once caught a catfish with a large tumor, which put me off even worse.

Nevertheless, my parents are thinking of renting a cottage on George this summer and I'll probably go up and try my luck. There are several willing fisherman in our family, so we may need two boats...
I'm not as avid a fish cleaner as I used to be but I can clean the old-fashioned way or I can filet too, though the smaller fish make only a potato chip once fried up.
