'Coalition to End Gun Violence' Stands With Local Law Enforcement Against Changes to State's Conceal/Carry Laws U-M Survey Data Shows That 65% of Minnesotans Support Current Laws ST. PAUL, Minn., Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The Minnesota Coalition to EndGun Violence, comprised of public health and advocacy organizations, gatheredtoday at the state capitol to show its support for local law enforcement andagainst changes to Minnesota's Conceal/Carry gun laws. The coalition warnedMinnesotans that a well-organized and intimidating minority would be pushingto relax the state's Conceal/Carry laws during the legislative session thatopened Tuesday. Last year, a bill that would have allowed an additional 50,000 loadedhandguns in public failed to pass by one vote in the Minnesota Senate. Thecoalition encouraged citizens to get active by contacting their electedrepresentatives to voice their opposition to changes in the state'sConceal/Carry laws. "It's clear from the survey data that Minnesotans don't want more loaded, concealed handguns on our streets," said Rebecca Thoman, Executive Director ofCitizens for a Safer Minnesota. "Nearly two-thirds of Minnesotans trust lawenforcement to protect them. We are here today to underscore our support forlocal law enforcement and to highlight the fact that the vast majority ofMinnesotans do not want changes to the state's Conceal/Carry gun laws." Thoman released data collected by the University of Minnesota Center forSurvey Research showing that 65% of state residents support current laws whichallow citizens to carry a concealed weapon if they have shown a "specialneed," such as for security guards. Bill Gillespie, Executive Director of the Minnesota Police and PeaceOfficers Association and Larry Podany, Anoka County Sheriff and Chair of theMinnesota Sheriffs Association's Legislative Committee noted that they supportenforcement of our current laws and see no need to relax Minnesota'sConceal/Carry laws. State Senator John Hottinger, (DFL-District 24, Mankato) urged Minnesotansto contact their elected officials in St. Paul and let them know of theiropposition to Conceal/Carry law changes.
