Yep, if my present job doesn't work out, I'm thinking about crabbing as a career change.
OK, I'm a wuss. Maybe I'll just go have some crablegs at the DeadLobster! [:D]

The latter is probably a good idea. I don't think there are a lot of openings in the crab fishing industry. If a spot opens up on a crew, it goes to some family member in their close-knit little community, I suspect.

    I'm hooked.

There is a lot of reality on the show, but its like OC choppers and all the rest. They have to add the staged drama bs.

Notice that every year there is wanna be Captain that doesn't make it, etc.

remember guys...it's a TV show....most of the dead calm weather left on the editing room floor....trying to make out like it's ohhhh soooo hard....fishing weather they wouldn't normally fish (especially since it went IFQ) Hiring crew men based on how they look on film.....piniatas? and gymnastics on deck? how tired were they?
what were those suits those guys were wearing? pool floaties?
In real life...its long hours. moving quick, monotonous bait cutting bait jar filling..... breaking ice isnt fun especially when the pots are on deck (freezing spray sucks)...once you get a system down it's really clock work...

remember frank...I been there...I have pictures like that too. we jog into the schnit till it blows over...10-15 foot seas are not that big a deal on a 100-130 foot boat

When I lived on Adak, a buddy of mine (Navy Commander) had one of those crab boats. I never went out with him and after I saw a couple to those shows I'm glad I didn't. We didn't have a processing plant, he just sold to friends and neighbors. I had a standing order with him for fifty pounds of crab every time he went out. Just cleaning and cooking fifty pounds of crab was plenty of adventure for me. Fifty pounds sounds like a lot, but after they are cleaned and cooked, it's not so much. Break their back, rip off the legs, throw them in the pot, melt some butter, bake a potato and eat til it hurts. I really like that show, but it makes me hungry.

I agree, even a a 30' boat it's not that bad. Even here off of centeral CA I have been in a small boat in 25'+ swells and ya get tossed around a little. Just seeing a 100+ foot ship in 60+ foot swells and trying to work can't be easy is all I am saying.

I know what you mean...just in the real world, when it gets that rough we don't fish. just sit in the wheel house mindlessly going up and down the swells until the storm blows over...no one wants to die over a missed day of fishing. but let one skipper start hauling pots and ..well we are competative[}:)]

I have many good friends who worked the crabbers, some who still do, and many who died doing it. All 14 of the guys who disappeared when the Americus and the Altair went down in 1983 were from my home town.

Don't let anybody kid you that it's not rough work. They fish in hurricane-force winds and below-zero temperatures.

Americus and ALtair...sister ships built at Dakota creek in Anacortes and homeported with crews from the town...coast guard investigation concluded operator error...the ships had been recently converted with large gantrys for trawling and it was believed that weight was not taken into account when assesing on deck weight (POTS) allowed and that the boats were overloaded and top heavy when they left port causing them to capsize in 17 foot seas.

    The men who died, on the Americus: George Nations, 43; his son, Jeff Nations, 19; Brent Boles, 24; Larry Littlefield, 29; Paul Northcutt, 24; Victor Bass, 19; and Rich Awes, 20;

on the Altair: Ron Beirnes, 47; Lark Breckinridge, 24; Troy Gudbranson, 21; Jeff Martin, 23; Tony Vienhage, 27; Brad Melvin, 26; and Randy Harvey, 23.
the I was 22 YO that valentines day and was pot fishing for crab aboard the Prowler (1st time up) the underlined guys were good friends and neighbors, classmates

I fished on the U S Dominator out of Seattle. If I remember correctly, it was built at Dakota Creek in 1979. Lotta good boats came out of that shipyard.
Problem in the Bering sea is the fact it's so shallow. There is no ground swell to speak of & the waves are actually wind chop.
Sometimes it seems like the wave heighths are about 1/2 the wind speed in feet. I remember getting tossed 6' from my bunk (which had 8" sideboards) during a blow. All you can do is climb back in bed & try to sleep. Might be your only chance for a few days.
BIG BUCKS but you earn every penny, IMNSHO.

Scott: Do you know Brent Boles' older brother Bill? Also a fisherman. I graduated from high school with him and have known him close to 50 years. He just died from cancer the 1st of May. [:(]

He survived 2 tours in Vietnam as a medic, survived many years fishing in the Bering Sea, and then gets taken out by the Big C.

    No justice in this world.

RIP, Bill. See ya on the other side.
