besides all that, if you are paying for a second phone line for the internet, the cost will be about the same for the dsl.
I used to pay $20.00 for dial up and about $25 for the second phone line...with Dsl its about $45, so its still the same price for a lightning fast connection.
hope this helps.

The speed depends a lot on how it is marketed to your area.
Some telcos use the fire and forget method, you order ADSL, they cut your line to it, and you get what you get, like darkstar explained. That way they can push the distance a little more if the cable isnt loaded (treated for loss, analog voice lines over 18kft have to be treated) deloading pairs costs money, and after they are unloaded they cant be thrown to move service.
The other way is its sold by speed. You order a 512k down 128k up line, you will get a minimum of 512 to the box outside from the telco. This is distance limited, approx 18000 feet cable lenth from the telco. ( see loading pairs) Mostly your options are 512k, 1.5M, and 3M service.
The phone co I work for does the second option, and we boosted the rate by about 10% to gar. everyone a min of 512k, I get 570 at the demark. Its faster than the LAN at work.
The rate in my area is 45 bucks for a 512k, that includes the ISP. Its stable, your speed wont vary, in 2 years we had 1 outage in our network here. It is secure, unlike cable where your info can be pulled down by anyone on the physical cable that you are on with a sniffer program, no big deal for the home user but is you do biz or a lot of credit card xfers over the net, its somthing to think about.

I am 20 miles from town where my teleco is at but i am about 50 ft from one of them big white boxes that the main fiber cable is located.
for living in the sticks my teleco offers a lot more services than a lot of big towns get, like the state capital Pierre doesnt have nearly the service that i can get. my teleco is a locally owned coopertive but covers a pretty good chunk of eastern SD mostly rural areas and small towns.
thnaks for the replies and info

OK, ADSL is ALWAYS faster than dial up.
