Don't NEED to, ysacres, the Rugers are great guns, but Pythons really are works of art!!! Kinda like buying a SAA rather than a Blackhawk. You pay a lot for the name!I have a Ruger budget, personally. Ain't got no Colts, but I have fired some, mostly a buddy's old Nickel Python. The cylinder closing feels like a bank vault, and it shore is purty!! I've heard the new ones are not as well-built, but I don't know it for a fact....

I have a GP-100 in stainless and is a fine pistol. Like most (probably all) Rugers, the trigger sucks the bag. That would be a reason to go for the Colt by all accounts; I have never personally had a chance to compare the two side by side.

You can have it ysacres, The Stainless GP-100 did not cost that much new! That will make it easier to live with the Ruger trigger. At 30 feet, I can put all the bullets through the head of a human outline target. Could probably probably get them tighter with a better trigger.

You can't compare a Python to a Ruger. The Ruger is a fine weapon. But to compare it to a Colt is not fair. The Ruger is like a Ford Taurus compared to a Colt ( Lincoln Town Car) They have different criteria. They both have their niches. If you want a good all round gun get the Ruger. If you want a great gun get the Colt.

ysacres - You are worth the price, old man. You work hard and you deserve a little something for yourself now and again. Hey, when the curtain's drawing to a close, is that $800 bucks really going to matter? You can always get at least that much if you ever need to sell it. And in Royal Blue? They just ain't makin' 'em like that anymore. Plus, look at the investment potential. Why, in 10 or 15 years, who knows? This thing might pay for a year in college for one of the kids. And you know you were thinking about maybe selling that other gun anyway so if you factor that in, you're really only out of pocket about $450. $450 for a Python? Jump on it with both feet. When this one's gone, it's gone for good. All of the above are just some of the reasons you NEED to buy that Python. Have I missed any of the standard rationalizations/justifications?

Although I'm not much into revolvers, if I had the money, I'd jump on it in a heartbeat. Have always wanted a Python. Really wish I'd bought one back when I had an FFL. The were going for about $600.Mudge the tardy

I don't think there is any difference between the "Elite" and the older models, other than the rollmark. They are "custom production" models which I guess means made like they always were but in the Custom Shop.Colt's so strapped, they're doing whatever it takes to sell guns these days.

This doesn't answer your question, but I have a Ruger SP101 357 mag that is worth more money now than when it was new.

I would rather spend the extra to buy the python. One pistol that shoots extremely well compared to one that throws lead? Hell, I can throw lead with out a pistol, but accurately, i doubt it. As was said before, The older colts are better. Recently, I do not know how recent, Colt has started subcontracting out alot of its parts to Uberti. Not as smooth as the original masterpeices.songdog

Buy the colt you will never regret it. I used to own several rugers and for the money they are good, but a python is better than great. I have 2 pythons and they are both rolls royces bentleys compared to rugers ford pinto. I hope that clarifies the difference enough for all that read this. I failed to mention that outta all those rugers that I had, I sold them all and now nearly have all the colt snake series revolvers in the set. I would buy a ( I can't believe that I am saying this but buy) smith & safety hammer before you buy a ruger GP-(P.O.S.)100. IMHO

COLT- What is left in the snake series? I already have the anaconda in 8 3/8 44 mag, and I am working on a python right now. I had to put the python on a back burner as i was saving up for a h&k 45. That puchase will be this upcoming weekend. songdog

Colt is NOT using any Italian (Uberti) parts in its production.

Just my opinion, but I think the Python is the most over rated revolver in the world! I have owned two Pythons and compared side by side with my Smith 686, they just did not compare. They are much more fragile than the Smiths, they seem to go out of timing easier and they just are not as accurate. Plus the trigger pull on the Pythons I have shot left alot to be desired! I think the Python name is what sells the gun, not the actual quality.

Kind of off the subject here but I was looking in the auction side of the house and I saw several snake series sets. I must say that I've never heard of the King Cobra before, is that in .45LC?

I got to fondel a python at a pawn shop awhile back. I must say it was the nicest feeling peice of steel and wood my fingers have ever layed prints on. The item # mentioned above was made the year i was born. I just cant fathom a gun 42 yrs old looking so good. Anyway the "elite" might not be so "elite" after all.

The only Colt revolver I've ever owned (and still own) is a .357 Lawman. That piece has the distinction of being the most inaccurate handgun I've ever fired. Sometimes I can't even tell where the round went.I assume this is not typical of all Colt firearms.

Well, they could call one the "Rattler" but it might give the wrong marketing impression as to quality. ;*D

SaxonPig,There is the Viper and the Cobra (remember, the Cobra is a completely different gun than the King Cobra). That makes 7. This was a trivia question I read a long time back somewhere; I seem to recall that there were 8 named snakes that Colt has produced but I can't think of the other one. I'll have to check my Numrich Gun Parts catalog.
