Gunsmithing Schools

I'd like to learn some basic-intermediate gunsmithing in order to be able to restore old military firearms and do more of the repair, maintenance, and customizing on my guns. I don't have the time or money to attend an in-residence gunsmithing school, so I was wondering if anybody had any books, video courses, etc. they could recommend that would help me.

Now that the GI Bill benefits have gone up again, I've been thinking about what to do with mine. I have about 2 semesters left towards the Business Administration degree that I was pursuing before joining the Army but have had other thoughts as the years have passed. While residing at Fort Jackson, South Carolina for 2 months last spring I attended the "Sportsman's Classic" at the fairgrounds in Columbia, SC. Montgomery Community College had a table set up there advertising their gunsmithing program and they had some GORGEOUS guns on display that their students had built. I have always had this dream of becoming a gunsmith after retirement and then becoming an Army Marksmanship Unit gunsmith and then getting paid to travel all over the world with them. I know it's a long shot but I'm sure there would be something equally enjoyable and rewarding for me if I don't quite hit the mark I'm aiming for. Are there any suggestions for excellent gunsmithing schools and where I might be able to find more information about them?

Has anyone here ever taken the gunsmithing correspondence course offered by Education Direct from Scranton Pa. What did you think of it? Has anyone had any experience with any other gunsmithing correspondence schools?Any opinions on this type of thing?

I have no experience, but wouldn't that be something you would want to learn in person?

Paula.............I have completed a correspondance gunsmithing corse thru NRI (national radio institute), and I was not very impressed. I recieved training elsewhere also and it all came together. I do value that training as a steping stone to what I really needed to learn about gunsmithing, but correspondance corses are not a credible training corse on it's own. Good luck.
