When you're from Texas, people that you meet ask you questions like, "Do you have any cows?" "Do you have horses?" "Bet you got a bunch of guns, eh?" They all want to know if you've been to Southfork. They watched Dallas.Have you ever looked at a map of the world? Look at Texas with me just for a second. That picture, with the Panhandle and the Gulf Coast, and the Red River and the Rio Grande is as much a part of you as anything ever will be. As soon as anyone anywhere in the world looks at it they know what it is. It's Texas.Pick any kid off the street in Japan and draw him a picture of Texas in the dirt and he'll know what it is. What happens if I show you a picture of any other state? You'll get it maybe after a second, but who else would? Even if you do, does it ever stir any feelings in you?In every man, woman and child on this little rock the Good Lord put us on, there is a person who wishes just once he could be a real live Texan and get up on a horse or ride in a pickup. There is some bit of Texas in everyone.Did you ever hear anyone in a bar go, "Wow...so you're from Iowa? Cool, tell me about it?" Do you know why? Because there's no place like Texas.Texas is the Alamo. Texas is 183 men standing in a church, facing thousands of Mexican nationals, fighting for freedom, who had the chance to walk out and save themselves, but stayed instead to fight and die for the cause of freedom. We send our kids to schools named William B. Travis and Bowie and do you know why? Because those men saw a line in the sand and they decided to cross it and be heroes. John Wayne paid to do the movie himself. That is the Spirit of Texas. Texas is Sam Houston capturing Santa Ana at San Jacinto. Texas is Juneteenth and Texas Independence Day. Texas is huge forests of Piney Woods like the Davy Crockett National Forest.Texas is breathtaking mountains in Big Bend. Texas is shiny skyscrapers in Houston and Dallas. Texas is world record bass from places like Lake Fork. Texas is Mexican food like nowhere in the world, even Mexico. Texas is the Fort Worth Stockyards and the Bass Hall. Texas is larger-than-life legends like Willie Nelson and Buddy Holly, Earl Campbell and Nolan Ryan, Denton Cooley and Michael DeBakey, Sam Rayburn and George Bush.Texas is great companies like Dell Computer and Compaq. Texas is huge herds of cattle and miles of crops. Texas is skies blackened with doves, and fields full of deer. Texas is a place where cities shut down for the Cowboys on Monday Night Football, and NIOSA River Parade in San Antonio.Texas is ocean beaches, deserts, lakes and rivers, mountains and prairies, and modern cities. If it isn't in Texas, you don't need it. No one does anything bigger or better than it's done in Texas.By federal law, Texas is the only state in the U.S. that can fly its flag at the same height as the U.S. flag. Think about that for a second. You fly the Stars and Stripes at 20 feet in Maryland, or California, or Maine, and your state flag, whatever it is, goes at 17. You fly the Stars and Stripes in front of Pine Tree High in Longview at 20 feet, the Lone Star flies at the same height--20 feet.Do you know why? Because we place being a Texan as high as being an American down here. Our capitol is the only one in the country that is taller than the capitol building in Washington, D.C. We included these things in as part of the deal when we came on. That's the best part right there. WHEN WE CAME ON.Texas was its own country. The Republic of Texas. Every time I think of that I tear up. It makes you proud to be a Texan.-- Author UnknownPS: My second-born son is named Travis. Guess who he was named after. Nunn

I was stationed in Texas in 1969 while in the Army. I liked Texas fine. But..."Breathtaking mountains???" I don't think so.Some hills that Texans like to call mountains, maybe.Lowrider: From Washington State where we do, in fact, have breathtaking mountains.Anyone from Colorado like to chime in on this?

I had a buddy in the Army who was from Texas. He was getting ready to go on leave and I asked him where he was going. He said, "Well, I been damn near everywhere there IS to go; West Texas, South Texas, North Texas... This time I think I'll go somewhere I've never been, like East Texas."As far as he was concerned the world was pretty insignificant outside of Texas.

Judge, you might want to consider a refresher course in grammer. It would be time well spent!

I must admit, I do like Texas.....always a treat to be sent down there on business trips. Have had the great honor of working with Phil Gramm and GWB, and they don't come any better.....Nunn, I know everything is always bigger in Texas, but it takes me forever to drive across your state.....are the "miles" longer also?

nunn,I agree with you whole heartedly. I too am proud to be a Texan, and having lived elsewhere in my years, I realize there's something special here. The people seem to be a little more loyal and a little more respectful. I glad I was born here, and I'll be content to die here. God Bless America, and Texas, too!

Texas is ok,, I travel down there quite often on "business"(delivering cheap freight!) One thing that really sticks out to me is the people in southwestern texas. Imagine how surprised I was while travelling down some 2 lane road , catching slow cars and they move over for you! How nice! Better than those dang New England states where they teach people in school that when merging onto a 3 lane highway you go directly into the middle lane and stay there! Do not move and dont let those big trucks pass you!NEVER! As far as mountains I have to agree with the other fella, Mountains in Texas??nope. Aint none, nowhere. Hills maybe but no mountains. You want mountains and even prettier than Washington state? Go to Colorado, get on I70 and go west from Denver and head straight to Utah, get on I15 and go south. You will see mountains. One other state has got everything and more than Texas. But I will be sorry for saying this, (god please forgive me for I am about to sin)California has got everything to offer, desert, green praries, crops, snow capped mountains, beaches and some pretty dang big cities. california has it all, just to bad the politics and 80% of the people there SUCK!

UltraMag: I spent a month riding my Harley over every mountain pass in Colorado. You won't see the best of the Rockies from the Interstates.Drive over the top through Rocky Mountain Nat'l. Park and down the Big Thompson Canyon to Estes Park, or over Independence Pass (way over 12,000 feet), or US 40 through Steamboat Springs and over Berthoud Pass, or up through Leadville, or Telluride.Man! I love that state.

I wish I could but we all know that trucks cant go sightseeing everywhere we would like to. So I have to put up with only seeing the tip of the iceberg.

No state income tax here in Wa(r)shington either. But don't spread that around. Especially to folks from Kalifornia.

I have a idea about why Kalifornia sucks so bad..Like Flarda, most of the people who live there, and vote, are from the northeast.Take note of their accent sometime, and see if I`m wrong..218

I like this post. My family came to Texas 150 years ago, and I always tear up when I hear"The Eyes of Texas Are Upon You".And we have mountains closer to heaven than a lot of other states., And trees, lord, do we have trees. Is there anything more majestic the a Mesquite? I have got to go now. I am getting all choked up.

The best thing about Texas is the Cowboy cheerleaders. This year, the way our GIANTS are playing, they probably couldn't beat them either. -Charlie

I was Raised in that GREAT STATE just outside of Ft.Worth - now just dislocated in Washington. I must agree with Lowrider about the scenery here and in Colorado. Jumped a train in Minturn CO. and road it to Leadville. That was in the fall of 78. I will never forget the colors and rough peaks and valleys you would never see from the regular roads. I have been all over the states but a piece of my heart still belongs to TEXAS !!
