WILSON, N.C. (AP) - Two police officers in town from
Raleigh to teach a gun course lost a submachine gun and a handgun out of the back of their
pickup truck. They couldn't find the weapons, but commuters did. The officers came to Wilson
on Tuesday to teach a submachine gun certification course sponsored by Wilson Technical
Community College, authorities said. After they arrived, they realized that two bags of gear
were missing from the back of their pickup. The bags held one MP-5 submachine gun, one
handgun, several spare magazines, notebooks and other supplies for the class. An MP-5 is
capable of firing 9 mm ammunition at a rate of 800 rounds per minute. The officers retraced
their route into town but couldn't find the guns, and had to call local police. About two dozen
Wilson police officers and Wilson County sheriff's deputies helped search for most of the day
without success. In the meantime, a Wilson resident found the bag containing the submachine
gun near U.S. 301, took it home and called police after discovering what was in the bag.
Another resident found the handgun along U.S. 264. A spokesman for the Raleigh police
department did not immediately return a call for comment Wednesday.

Look at the bright side. One of the good guys found the weapons and called. It could have been one of the bad guys and many people would be in serious danger. My cup is always half full.

Another case of Dumb & Dummer

And yet here in New York a CCW holder of over 15 years had his permit "Pulled" by the County Judge because he left his handgun in a locked box in a locked car trunk, while he went in to visit his wife in a hospital. While he was inside some lowlife broke into the car and took the car stereo, and the contents of the trunk. This guy is a good customer of mine so now I have his guns in my safe while he awaits his appeal, yet these PO's were riding around with a machine gun in the back of and open pick-up.

I am issued a FN P90 submachinegun by my dept. for my SWAT duties. I am always "on-call" and carry the P90 in my vehicle as well as my pager nearly everywhere I go. My Chief does not have to tell me that if I lost the P90 I would be looking for another job; I would resign. It was totally irresponsible of these guys to "lose" their weapons. Sometimes these do get stolen, but absolutely every measure must be taken to avoid the loss of LE weapons by any means.

I whole heartedly agree with what Dano said. No excuse. Period.

I can't understand the judge that pulled the permit. What was he supposed to do? It sounds like due dilligent care was taken in storing the gun. The crook had to commit a felony to steal the gun. Was he suppossed to go to the local bank and rent a safety deposit box? Then what if the bank was burglarized and the gun taken from the box? Would then still pull the permit?

When you are approved for your permit in his county you agree to safeguard your guns and it does spell out no glovebox or trunks.
    "QUOTE" from the agreement
To assure maximum safety, proper safeguards must be taken at all times to keep firearms away from unauthorized persons,ESPECIALLY CHILDREN.
5.Firearms should not be left in the glove compartment or trunk of autos, or any place where unauthorized persons may readily have
    access to them.

Well I have a big problem with a locked trunk and "or any place where unauthorized persons may readily have
    access to them."
Excuse me, but breaking into a locked vehicle trunk is not and never was "readily ...access".
And of course you are right we most likely do not have all the facts.

Dano, here in NY the pistol permit program is run by the Sheriff's dept of every county, but the county judge is in charge.
The judge signs off on the permits once the Sheriff's dept is done processing the paperwork, even adding a new gun to your permit must be approved by the judge,my county is not bad, the judge lets them rubber stamp the application.
But other counties in the state require an interview with the judge everytime you want to add a new handgun, some county judges have gone as far as require you to purchase a safe if you have 10 or more handgun on your permit.
