This machine is about to become a target, but first I need to know which is best to replace it with.

I'm looking at two that both have 2gb memory and 500 gig hard drive. The choice is between Compaq Presario and eMachine.
What I don't know is which processor is best. One is the AMD Sempron and the other is the Intel Celeron.

I know the Intel is the big name, but haven't even heard of the AMD brand. Could anybody tell me which has the best reputation? Is one any better than the other?

I was looking at some used/refurb/lease return computers on fleabay.

Most come with no operating system. WHY?

I have seen boxes at Staples with the various Windows system disks, starting at about $100. Are these hard to install?

I am looking for a computer for my mother to use. Her old one is trying to quit on her.

I have been using an old pentium II with 128 meg's of ram, 4 gig hard drive and 400 MHZ. It is loaded to the brim and very fast. I have a newer one with a AMD athlon, 40 gig hard drive, 512 megs of ram and 1400 MHZ. with nothing loaded into it. The older pentium is much faster than the amd. Why? The older machines hard drive only has 312 megabytes left open!

is there any way to use my laptop and a search and destroy program to kill the virus in my PC?
would hooking the two together just transfer the virus to my laptop?

To network 2 computers, both need the card

You really don't need it if the PC is for occasional (daily) home use.

What it is is a network card that will alow you high speed internet acess through cable or ADSL which is through your phone line. Most computers come with it but if you had to buy one they are worth about 15$

The 10/100 refers to the speed that the network interface card (NIC) can transmit and receive data, measured in millions of bits per second, on a computer network (an Ethernet network, to be exact). Because it is a 10/100 it can participate in "high-speed" 100Mbps networks, as well as the slower 10Mbps networks. A NIC allows a computer to communicate with other devices on a network such as printers or other computers. As Maverick pointed out, you'll need a NIC to use a cable, DSL or other broadband Internet connection. These cards are very inexpensive and shouldn't be considered a major bonus if included when buying a new PC. In fact, an integrated or built-in NIC might be worse then just adding your own because it may not be removable or require you adjust settings on the motherboard to disable it if you want to use a better or faster NIC. Today, fiber optic NICs can transmit and receive data at Gigabit speeds or 1000Mbps. These speeds are even attainable over Category 5 copper cable these days.Anyway, bottom line, if you plan on using cable or DSL to access the Internet instead of your analog modem, you'll need one of these cards.G36 the longwinded (finally, something I know something about!)
