Fall bugs ?

Does anybody know what these are?
About the last week of July or the first week of August you start hearing them.
They make a distinct "crick crick" "crick crick crick" sound from the tops of trees.
Never down low. Always in tops of tallest trees.
You only hear them after dark.
I have always heard them called fall bugs.
Anybody know what they really are ?

I think what you might be asking about is a Cicada. They almost look like a really large fly.

It's a dog-eat-dog world...and nine times out of ten I have on Milk-Bone underwear.

I'm no bug expert, but I've been "treated" to incredibly loud "concerts" by Cicada in broad daylight.

I'm pretty sure theyre not any type of Cicada.
I have searched and Chinch destroys grass.
These are mostly in the deep woods.
Only make noise after dark.
Only in tops of tallest trees.

I may not know what kind of bug they are but where i live there are Fruit Bats(no clue where they came from) that live in the very top of a majority of the trees in my area. these things are the size of a colt python![}:)]

Sounds like they could be tree frogs.Tiny,about3/4"

I'm with buffler,they are most likely Tree Frogs.Here in Maine they seem to show up about this time of year.The ones we have here never seem to get longer than an inch.

I had thought they had kinda a froggy sound but I also thought frogs done thier thing in the spring.
