To insure or not to insure

Wanted to get some opinions on insuring guns. Last time I talked to my ins agent he/she said that if I specificly wanted to add them to my rental policy then they'd need the serial numbers and such. So my paranoia about anyone actually documenting what weapons I own set in and I quickly decided that wasn't going to happen. Well, my collection has grown since then so now I need to rethink this. I'll never have the cash again to build this kind of collection from scratch so I'm wondering if maybe I should get them insured and would like to get some opinions on the topic. What's everyone else do? or think?

Buy a safe, (good one). Consider the cost of the insurance rider per year, multiply that by the number of years you plan on insuring them (rest of your life?). Does this number come up to more than the safe? The safe is good for other things as well. photo albums, documents, family airlooms (sp?) etc. jewelry, etc etc etc.

GreenLatern,Take it from me, INSURE THEM!!!! You never know when you right about to lose everything. Last August I woke up to the sound of fire trucks and ambulances. Some ***hole decided to get buck-naked and play with paraffin on the stove. No, I didn't ask and I don't care. The point is I lost almost everything. My place was so badly burnt they wouldn't let me go in. Thankfully my guns were in the front closet next to the door or they would still be at my apartment. I say get the safe for when your not home, but if your place ever gets burned as bad as mine did, they may not let you get to it. By the time you finally get to your safe lots of other low lives have had their chance. The best plan is a backup plan followed by another backup plan! Monkey

So my backup plan would be to insure the guns. Then back that up by getting a fireproof (retardent?) gun safe. Hmmm, probably better bury the safe in the back yard too. (Ok, just kidding on the last part. Guys, thanks for the input)
