DONATE TO THE BRADY CENTER THROUGH THE UNITED WAYThink of the Brady Center when making your workplace donation this year! If you have not done so already, please designate the Brady Center (listed as the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence) to receive your workplace pledge this year. Our Designation Number is #2574. And don't forget, if we are not listed in your campaign, you can write us in! Your gift will help us educate Americans in your community about the importance of violence prevention. Help us create an America where people are safe at home, at school, at work, and in our communities.

NO!I donate to the Christian Apalachian Fund. It provides housing, food and medical to impoverished American families of all races in the Apalachian designate. At least here they won't skim or squander.[This message has been edited by alledan (edited 11-04-2001).]

I give to the United Way and direct my gift to Hope Cottage. My wife was given up for adoption through them, and I am truely thankful for what they did for her.If you have a problem with some of the agency's that are supported by United Way, direct them to the agency of your choice. Some of them are great, and most of them have no stand at all on the gun issues.

Having served once on an Allocations Committee for the United Way, I would make one comment. Yes, you can direct your gift to a particular organization within the United Way; but, if you do, some other person's gift will be reduced by the same amount. In other words, each member organization is going to get its budgeted amount. So your money is still going to the Brady Center or Planned Parenthood or whomever you are trying to avoid. You need to make your donation directly to that particular organization and not through the United Way program if you indeed want your money handled as you wish.

Why should I give money to the United way, only to have them take a percentage off the top that was intended for the charity? To those who support the United Way, I have to say:Give DIRECTLY to the charities of your choice. Cut out the middle man and his take (United Way). Stop being so damn lazy that you can't write a check each month for a worthy cause! Simply make the charities you care about part of your bills. Pay them each month just as ou would food, rent/mortgage, etc. Even if the United way only supported charities I felt were worthwhile (and many they give to I would NEVER give a cent to!), I'd donate directly. Never have, never will. If I choose to donate to a charity it goes directly to the charity anonymously, and I don't write it off on my taxes, because doing so only puts the brunt of my donation upon other taxpayers. And besides, I UNWILLINGLY donate through taxes, to charity cases who should be doing productive work. Maybe when that stops, I'll donate more, voluntarily. Then again, maybe if I work for the United Way, I can get a limousine!!!!!! I wonder how many of the people that they purport to "help" get around in limos?

ref44 and luger01,I have given to the United Way for 27 years. I never considered them an anti-gun organization, and I was satisfied with the way they handled the scandal a few years back.I do not consider myself lazy, and I do contribute to several organizations directly. I have always admired the work the United Way has done, and was impressed with the help they gave a family in my church when the self employeed man came down with MS.Again, Hope Cottage saved my wife from distruction and found her a loving home. That was not the United Way, but I am still greatful. If you guys can show me good cause, and back it up with facts, I will reconsider how I contribute. I can always send my contribution to Hope Cottage directly. Funny though, they are the ones who asked me to donate through thr United Way. There must be some reason they didn't want a direct donation. I wonder what it is?

I gave to the United Way until they banned the Boy Scouts for not allowing gay leaders. I'm an Eagle Scout and as I see it when an organization cold shoulders the scouts, they are doing it to me.Now I give to Lord's Kitchen mainly, but others as well. BTW, Lord's Kitchen is run by Dr. E.V. Hill's church and serves about 30,000 meals a week in South Central Los Angeles.

This past halloween, my wife asked me where all of the change is, because several of her students were going to be collecting for the UNITED WAY. I said "No way, to the United WAY, and told her to give any of those who come to the house collecting, some extra candy instead. Fortunately, none of her students came to the house.

I give directly to the charity of my choice. I do not believe the United Way or Red Cross are using half the dollar for charity. Do you know someone who has lost all in a house fire? Or has a disease with no insurance? That's where our dollars should go - not some organization that siphons off 50% for the big wheels.
