I had several people at work ask me about handguns today, for personal protection. They were all people who hadn't voiced an opinion aginst gun ownership in the past, but didn't own a gun either ... we have a Gun Show this weekend, I'm expecting a surge in sales. This may be a wake-up call to the fence riders that sit back and let someone else worry about their 2nd ammendment rights ... anyone else have any thoughts on this?

I had actually thought the same thing. I didn't want to mention it because I thought it might be taken the wrong way. I definitely think that many people who didn't have a strong opinion either way will be jumping on our side of the fence now. At about 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time I was at home preparing for the worst. I can only imagine the terror some people must have felt when they realized that they had no way to defend themselves should sh*t hit the fan..

We have two basic mindsets here in the United States... And perhaps throughout the world in general.First, we have those that believe "They or Them" (Read that government or officialdom) must protect the average citizen. This will translate into reduced rights, greater restrictions, and the loss of freedom. It's a price these folks are willing to pay and in the end it will buy them nothing.Second, there are those of us who realize that there's a certain risk in everything we do. We use our brains, we use our rights, and in some cases we use whatever means available to defend such. To us a loss of freedom is the loss of ability to do the one thing our constitution guarantees... Namely, the right to protect our own lives and interests! As to the talk of war and the general agreement that something must be done... Never forget that those of the first mindset somehow think that war is a wonderful idea if "They or Them" fight it.We of the second mindset see war as a personal item... The duty of a citizen to be taken on willingly and on a personal basis.God, Help us!I truely believe that the only solution to this problem is a national policy of absolute intollerance for any act directed at this nation. We don't look for friends, we don't seek approval, and we become known to be absolutely merciless in our quest to eliminate those who would do us harm.In other words our eventual safety would be guaranteed by national policy... Harm one hair of a U.S. citizen and the full fury of the nation will be directed toward you and yours! No excuses, no exceptions, and no permission asked! Act against us and you will sign your own death warrant. Act with us and expect civil and fair treatment just as any one of us would naturally extend to another. And that's my humble opinion.

It's fine that many fence sitters are jumping our way. But putting guns in the hands of untrained people is not good. In some reports people are buying guns they don't even know how to load. Guns in the hands of such people have a strong potential for accidents, thus giving more fodder for the anti's.
So many guns to buy. So little money.[This message has been edited by badboybob (edited 09-12-2001).]
