Gov't: Pilots Can't Have Guns in Cockpit

Tuesday, May 21, 2002

WASHINGTON - The federal government announced Tuesday that pilots will not be allowed to have guns in the cockpits of commercial U.S. airplanes.

The announcement came at a Senate Commerce Committee hearing by John Magaw, undersecretary for transportation security. It followed months of debate over whether arming pilots would be a deterrent to hijackers.

Government officials, airline executives and pilots group had hotly debated the topic in the months following the Sept. 11 attacks. Some airlines had said they would allow their pilots to carry weapons, while other carriers opposed the plan.

Both Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta and Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge previously indicated their opposition to arming pilots.

Magaw gave no reason for his decision, which was announced in response to a question from Arizona Sen. John McCain, the top Republican on the committee. Magaw said a formal announcement will be made later in the week.

I really can not wait for the full report on their decision. How can the justice dept. rightly define the second amendment as an individual right to self defense, when at the same time the transportation secretary bans firearms from highly trained pilots responsible for hundreds of lives(thousands even).I'll bet they give some BS about securing the cockpit doors making their unpenetrable to outside combatants. If this is so,than I guess they are saying they are willing to take the chance that a terrorist combatant will slaughter a plane full of passangers and staff as long as the pilots maintain control of the plane.Makes me feel safe,HOW ABOUT YOU?

To paraphrase the famous Capt. Queeg...."Woe betide those in charge if there's another hijacking that could have been stopped by an armed cockpit crew."

A splendid time for the pilots to show us common folks that they are not pus-filled,spineless jelly-fish...by telling the government that they will not fly fedgov ordered death traps....ground then all until our masters send in the military.
To do less will prove that the pilots FEAR THE FEDGOV more then the hi-jackers......

    God,Guts,& GunsHave we lost all 3 ??

SP,I guess they are figuring on making the cockpit the safest area of the plane to minimize the threat of losing control of the plane.
