Hampton killing believed to be in self-defenseBy ERIKA REIF, Pilot Onlinec August 30, 2001 HAMPTON -- Detectives are seeking information about a shooting early Wednesday, when a man fired at three intruders, killing one and wounding two. As of Thursday afternoon, police had not charged the two injured intruders, who are being treated at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, police spokesperson Cpl. Jimmie Wideman said. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Hampton Police Division at 757-727-6111 or Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP. Crime Line callers remain anonymous and never appear in court. If a Crime Line call results in an arrest, the caller may be eligible for a reward up to $1,000. All three intruders had arrest warrants pending at the time of the shooting, Wideman said. The men were believed to reside in Hampton, but police did not have addresses where they could serve the warrants, he said. Two of the suspected assailants are 25-year-old Marquis Corbin and 23-year-old Malike Allen. The third suspect, 25-year-old Derrick Lyons, was dead on the scene when police arrived. Police have not identified the shooter because, at this point, he is considered a victim who fired in self-defense, Wideman said. According to police, the gunfire began shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday when Corbin knocked on a door at the Heather Lake Apartments, 99 Tide Mill Lane. Two men and a woman were in the apartment. One of them knew Corbin and opened the door. Moments later, two armed, masked men came from behind Corbin and forced their way through the door. Police believe that Corbin, also armed, was working with the assailants. In response, a man in the apartment immediately drew a gun and fired at the three coming through the door. He fired between 12 and 15 rounds, hitting all three men. One masked man, Lyons, was killed. No shots were returned, Wideman said. Police arriving at the apartment were concerned because some of the shots went through a wall into a neighboring apartment. They knocked on the neighbor's door. When no one answered, police and fire officials broke the door down to search for a possible victim, Wideman said. Instead, police entered a back bedroom and found a man asleep, uninjured. The resident had slept through the sounds of gunfire, knocking and door crashing. He said he had worked a double shift, was very tired and was a sound sleeper, Wideman said. Some bullets were recovered in other areas of his apartment. Police say that, after the shooting, Allen, who had been masked, ran to a nearby apartment seeking aid, and the resident called for emergency help. Allen had been wanted on a charge of failure to appear in court, Wideman said. Corbin, who had not been disguised, drove to his mother's house and she called for an ambulance. Corbin had been wanted since April on charges of maiming, use of a firearm, and possession of narcotics and marijuana; and since June on a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Wideman said. Lyons, the masked man who was killed, had been wanted for failure to appear in court, Wideman said. The person to whom the apartment was leased was not at home during the shooting. The man suspected of doing the shooting left the scene before police arrived but later went to police headquarters and spoke with detectives, Wideman said.
