8 inch vital zone

I just sighted my trusty old 35 remington, using the age old 8-inch vital zone.technique. It gets the most out of your cartrige. I sighted the gun in at 35 yds, 1 inch high. It ended up 4 inches high at 100 yards, 2 inches highat 200 yards, and dead on at 250 yards. I couldnt see good enough out of my scope to try; a 300 yard shot, but I'll bet it is 4 inches low at 300. Now if this works great for an old brush rifle, just think what you can do with your high power magnum rifles???FYI for those confused with this sytem, it is not for varmints. It is for deer sized game, and or hogs. With a rib cage larger than 8 inches. You aim dead center, at your target, and you will be up to 4 inches high, to 4 inches low, within, the cartriges capability. A 30-30 or 35 remington can push 300 yds. and a high power, can push maybe 450yards. Ok yall have fun.

I would love to see a 30-30 or a 35 rem hit a target at 300yrds!Those old puppies do good to make it 300yrds without dropping 1ft much less 4inches.What tree did you fall out of boy!

The same is said about the .45-70 with regards to bullet drop. However, that cartrige has some history in the long-range shooting competition arena.

Ted, you better redo your math on this one. I would hate for somebody to read this and think he could try a 300 yd shot because he was 1 inch high at 35 yards. The best BC I see for the .35 rem. is .245 and the highest vel. for that bullet (180 gr) is about 2100 fps. With a 200 yd zero, this bullet will be 4.8 inches high at 100 and 20.3 low at 300. It don't work.BTW, for those who want to use this method, it is call PBR (point blank range) that is the maximum range at which you can hold on a target and not have the bullet path exceed whatever parameter you establish. Ted used 8" (+/- 4") but I suggest using 6" (+/- 3") for deer size game. For the .35 Remington that makes the PBR aboutapx 150 yds (just an estimate).

I don't think my old 94 would go 300 yds if I pointed it up to 30 degrees. Darn good for a 35.

Guess you guys are right, 250 yards is tops..thanks for the info. I dont know about the math, must be the high scope mount, throwing things off, or the barrel length. I was using the remington express core lokt 200 grain. Okay later guys. But the system does work, and I know what I can do with my rifle. I'll keep you posted, and let you know what the system does with a 44 magnum with 24 inch barrel...later.guys. [This message has been edited by TED GAR (edited 01-16-2002).]
