Any experience with Gibbs 11mm Mauser rebuilds?

I've wanted a shootable 11mm for a long time. Generally I tend to prefer completely authentic guns, but the stores and shows around here never have them, or when they do they cost a fortune. Now I see some of these Gibbs rebuilds for sale with original barrelled actions but new other parts. Anyone know how much is original, versus repro? The price seems very nice to me at $299 MSRP. Gibbs warns not to shoot these but they look fine; has anyone out there shot them? Thanks.Jon

Jonk, Gibbs probably is trying to say that they will not warrent a rifle over 130 years old! Don't they use the term "modern powder" or something like that? I've seen adds like the one you mention. I was able to get a 71/84 about 18 months ago for less than $180. It looks and shoots great. My brother got one about 6 months before me and he only paid $200 (he's a high roller). My gunsmith told me that from time to time the market is flooded with them, as there are millions out there in one warehouse or another. I see them on auction sites now, and the price/bidding range seems inflated. Just be patient and one with your name on it will show up, for the right price.

Hey Jonk,I bought a Gibbs last summer; no two partson it have the same serial and the exteriormetal is rough but the wood (new) and thebore are perfect, it is quite deadly at200 yards and I used a fairly stiff loadof 4350. I've been meaning to try some clean shot with paper patch bullets. If you're patient you'll find a cheap oneor a fixer upper but the brass is fairlyexpensive. good luck & happy holidays
