Shot the .43 Mauser for the first time

Awhile back, I mentioned that I had picked up a .43 Mauser 71/84 from Gibbs. Someone here said not to fire it, it was junk. I disagreed, as everything works and is tight, the only blemish being some pitting on the outside of the barrel and reciever, which is notable but not severe. Well, using the tire method I fired it yesterday with a full load of cartridge black powder and a full load of smokeless as per load book guidelines. Worked fine. So I then shot it from the shoulder. Real tack driver. At 50 yards every shot fell into an inch group. Not bad for a hundred and sixteen year old gun with non matching parts. I think I'm in love. I'll have to pick up some more black powder cartridge rifles.

Jon,You can get better than 1500 fps with a casefull of FFg and the paper patched bullet. Can also use a duplex load for cleanerburning. I've been using AA 4350 and aharder cast bullet and am able to keep mostin a pie plate at 200 yds. If you match theballistics to the original ,(1450-1500), theimpact will be calibrated to the sight markings. Can't beat the Gibbs mausers for price or quality. I heard they came from a south american arsenal (don't know for sure). If you're not casting your own, buffaloarms sells hard cast .446 bullets. They alsohave the cases for about $1.10 ea.good luckjo
