Victim of a shill?

Hi, I suspect that I was the victim of a shill yesterday. I have NO proof. But the bidding had been lively & seemed to settle on a price. There was no activity for several days. With 2 minutes left in the auction, a new "party" hit the "buy it now" button & jumped the price by almost $200. If it had been someone already bidding I could understand. Either PT Barnum was right or the Seller did NOT like current price achieved.... There was no reserve. The seller had 2 auctions going on. THE SAME THING HAPPENED ON BOTH AUCTIONS! Maybe PT was right TWICE in quick succession????!!?Call me, Suspicious

An extremely large number of sold auctions are won in the final momememts either via last minute bids or BuyNow. For whatever reason people often wait until the last minute to place a bid.

Saxon: Thanks for the compliment!BuyNow does not go away after a bid. Although there are different opinions of this, GB 'wisdom' is that BuyNow is a tool a seller can use to arbitrate the high and low water marks for price of the item he wants. Say you have an item and you would sell it in a heartbeat for $1000, but you would take as little as $700. Set the Starting Bid at $700, BuyNow at $1000. If BuyNow disappered at the first bid you may never get to the $1000 mark even if one of the bidders was willing to bid $1000. Because of AutoBid you have to have 2 or more bidders interested to drive the bid up.The downside to a seller is that your BuyNow price will never be exceeded, which is why it is a high water mark.Just like all of the other features for buyers and sellers, BuyNow is a tool. Used correctly it can enhance the auction experience for both parties.Useful (useless?) trivia: 20% (1 out of 5) sold auctions at GB end via BuyNow. I was somewhat shocked when I heard this because it semms like a pretty high percentage.

JD I don't sell things via auctions but have bought 6 or 7 items using them. I may be lucky but have always received items as described, usually better. I'm sure there are rip offs out there but if one checks the feedback on a seller prior to bidding you can cut down on the bad buys. As far as prices are concerned, I've bought Leupold scopes used, for 1/2 of new, with a lifetime warranty how can you go wrong? I bought a stairclimber worth nearly 600 bucks for 25 dollars, hardly used. I'll keep shopping the auctions but I do use caution and don't buy unless the seller has numerous feedbacks from various buyers. [This message has been edited by ghotie_thumper (edited 12-03-2001).]

I have to admit that a while back, an item I was interested in got to be a bidding war, and it occurred to me to hit the buy it now button and end the battle. Oddly enough, I ended up "buying it now" for about $5.00 less than the high bid. Go figure. I look at it that anyone could have bought it now and stopped the auction, but I happened to be the one that thought of it. Good luck in your future dealings
