On my home owners insurance, jewelry, guns and boats are covered for only $1000.00 without buying extra insurance. So I asked my insurance agent, if someone steals my mower how much is it covered for? He said replacement value it personnal property. Now they will replace my $12,000 mower, but they will not replace a $2000 gun without buying extra insurance. Is this not personal property also. Can someone explain the differance for me. I find this odd. Thanks

I am not an agent but was an underwriter for many years. Jewelry, boats and guns are very often stolen so there is a limitation to what the company will cover without making additional charges. Same with coins, stamps and paintings. As far as the specific $12,000. mower; I would want that in writing from the agent or the company. Usually any high valued item, such as your mower, would be scheduled. Say you have a $125,000. home and insure the building for that amount. You would have $62,500. on contents and so much for additional outbuildings. You should talk with your agent in length about your coverages and what applies before you have a claim; saves a lot of aggrevation if you ever have a claim. Be sure your questions are answered, in writing, and please take the time to read your policy. Another portion of the policy that is overlooked is your liability and everyone should have at least a $1,000,000. coverage. Remember, the liability portion of the contract protects you if your dog bites someone, your child injures another child or you should accidently shoot someone while hunting or hit someone while driving your golf ball. I know, I am off the question you asked.
