Hunter Fined $20,000 for Killing Condor
Fri Aug 15, 5:46 PM ET

FRESNO, Calif. - A hunter was ordered to pay $20,000 Friday and sentenced to five years probation for killing an endangered California condor.

Britton Cole Lewis, 29, pleaded guilty in May to shooting the condor, North America's largest land bird according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

"I can honestly say I knew nothing about these condors," Lewis told a magistrate judge before sentencing. "I sincerely wish I could take back what I've done."

Since 1992, five California condors have been shot and killed. Nearly 200 remain alive today, including 79 in the wild.

Lewis also was fined and sentenced to three years probation for killing a white-tailed deer in Illinois in 2001. Lewis pleaded guilty to falsely saying he was a resident to obtain a hunting permit there. It became a federal crime when he brought the deer's mounted head to California in April 2002.

Was he going to eat it?[:(!] Sounds like an idiot who just wanted to shoot something![:(!] If he didn't know the game laws and his game, he shouldn't have been hunting.[:(!] These idiots are going to get legal hunting outlawed someday because they don't take it seriously![:(!] I can see a half drunk a-hole who wanted to impress his bud's![:(!]

Thanks jerk, you really helped us![:(!]

Condors are not the smartest birds in the world. Can't see the sport in shooting one and I'm sure they taste like s**t. This guy is obviously a slob hunter, I hope he never gets to hunt again.

"I didn't know nothin' 'bout no condors!"

Yeah, they're only the biggest, dumbest, ugliest birds in North America. Lucky for him there's not a moron fee in California or he'd be paying that one off til he was an old, old man.

Of course, so would most of the politicians here, but that's a subject for another thread...

Hunter? Don't you mean criminal? Too many people loop these criminals in as hunters. A hunter is some one who plays by the rules. Some one who does not shoot game animals legally is NOT a hunter. Slob hunter is not really an accurate term for this kind of activity. Not meaning to mince words with anyone but these types of criminals give real hunters a bad name.

This guy pisses me off, not only because he killed a condor, but because he is a repeat offender. Therefore, i think his fine should've been more like 50,000 and 30 days in jail.

When they come to get your GUNS, make sure to give them the AMMO first!!!

The rules are the same as ever... Don't shoot until you can positively identify your target. I think he should have served some jail time since this was his second wild game offense!
I am not very good at all the species of ducks so there are a lot of times I watch the birds fly on by without firing a shot because I couldn't identify them for sure.

Sheepdip, I think it's for transporting an illegally killed animal across state borders. If'n he woulda kept it in IL I think it woulda been a state matter.

The biologists have busted * for years to try to restore the Condor. This dumb *, especially as a repeat offendor, should get a year in jail.
This giant bird is even bigger than an eagle. There is no legal game that resembles this bird. This moron knew he was shooting some type of buzzard, which would be inedible in the first place.

Right you are. When the media says "Hunter fined..." what a blackeye to all of us. I get just as frosted when a New Orleans news caster says something like "A gentleman wearing a gray sweatshirt and white sneakers was seen running from the scene of..." "Gentleman", "Hunter", words don't seem to mean the same thing they used to.

Sheepdip: Do a google search for the Lacey Act and it makes interesting reading as relates to wildlife and federal intervention of illegally taken wildlife.
