More Mountain Lions In Iowa

Well, It seem's like we may have a problem here. Two phone workers seen a adult (very large) mountain lion yesterday AM. Also was seen this AM by my neighbor's wife, who has lived here all her life. Both are credable (sp?) sightings. Both less than two miles from my farm. With no snow on the ground, and very dry, seem's like tracking is out. I guess I will NOT try calling in 'yote's tonight. If I see one of these around any of my horses, it's a HK 91 dirtnap for him! They are not protected in Iowa.

idsman,I think it would scare the s%#t out of me to call this cat in. Do you think it would hunt a call? Could be fun with some back up! I think we would get our tit in a wringer if we went out looking for this cat, as the bunny huggers from Omaha would have a heyday over it!

We have a large number of Mountain Lions in this area. Usually they will prey on house cats initially but will move on to the family dog when the cat population runs low. If the cats aren't protected in your area you need to be thinning the herd. I live out in the sticks and don't like the idea of having a cougar watching me walk out to the barn to feed the horses at night. Good luck with your cat problem.

I've wanted a mountain lion mount for the collection for some time....if you get one and want to part with it let me know. If you need an exterminator to rid the pest problem...I'm also available.

Listen, I'd be more than happy to provide the backup. I'm tired of this desk jockey crap. I joined the Army to kill people and break things. I need some excitement in my life. Friday and Saturday evenings work best.Rembrandt, I think that one of these babies would look great next to that possessed deer with red eyes and tusks that you have mounted on your wall.[This message has been edited by idsman75 (edited 12-19-2001).]

Have .300 Weatherby....will travel.Just make sure we don't end up in the clink for "harvesting" a big cat. Just a thought.....wifey would look pretty nice lying "au natural" on a mountain lion skin rug. How about whoever caps it keeps it?[This message has been edited by Pup (edited 12-20-2001).]

Geez.....first 5 foot tall prairie dogs, now mountain lions. Sounds like the Hawkeye State is getting dangerous.

All I want is the couch for a night or two and you can keep the mount.P.S. did I mention I am in charge of several hundred thousand cases of beer? Shrink is acceptable in inventory sometimes. LOLI would definitely use a wounded call and even some fresh rabbits hung in the breeze. Scent ans sound!......... we probably will be telling stories and goofin off within the first few hours.

Did I ever tell you about the Big Cat that was in the backyard across the street at my other house? Houses were 11 feet from the property line kind of neighborhood, (5 to the acre) and miles to the nearest woods.Cougar had been tagged 120 miles away two years before. They "darted" it, and it fell and broke it's back on a chainlink fence.Made the front page of our little town's newspaper. Not what you would expect to see in Jacksonville, Fla.

Randy Ray Renshaw, a local morning radio personality with a morning talk show (KSCJ), opened up a show of his a few weeks ago about the prarie dog statues. Every swinging hunter was calling in to the show talking about what type of caliber and firearm they'd like to use to take down a mammoth prarie dog or likeness thereof. It was a riot. He's a fairly common-sense fellow and he had such a good time with it. He has a rather "balanced" radio show leaning slightly to the right. He stated that he wasn't a hunter and didn't have the desire to kill anything (not all conservatives do) but he had a ball with all of the shooting enthusiasts that called up.[This message has been edited by idsman75 (edited 12-20-2001).]

Regarding the cougar vs. mountain lion issue, there was a report, complete with pictures, of a mountain lion being killed by an automobile near Harlan, Iowa, earlier this year. (It was in all the papers.) The report said is was the first confirmed kill in Iowa since the early 1900s. Whether the power of suggestion generated visions of more mountain lions I do not know, but there are now more reports of sitings, as evidenced above. I doubt that all are illusions.

Hmmmmmm.....several thousand cases of beer? Now we're faced with a "mountainous" decision. Do we spend all day trying to track a cougar we probably won't lay eyes on, then sit around the fire swilling beer and telling our favorite hunting stories, or do we drink the beer first, then "liberate" some of these 5 foot 'dogs around town so the guys in the gun club can have some souveniers? Only one thing to do.....call it to a vote.

Should this vote be brought before the members of the SJC? A member of the SJC's leadership does reside in our state.

idsman....Absolutely. Although I do need to ask which is more importanat....a smoking jacket or a smoking gun? Now if we can wear one and have the other plus the beer and the cougar I'd say no need to count the ballots, hanging chads notwithstanding.
