Shas MK: "Why deny it? Jews did kill Jesus"

Rabbi Shlomo Benizri says Jesus met fate prescribed at the time, but wasn't crucified
Avishai Ben-Haim and Arik Bender

Shas MK Rabbi Shlomo Benizri has made an unusual contribution to the controversy about Mel Gibson's movie "The Passion of Christ": there's no denying a Jewish court did put Jesus to death, he said in a recent radio sermon -- but it wasn't as told in the New Testament.

In comments that were broadcast several weeks ago on one of Shas's pirate radio stations, Benizri said that according to the law then practiced by the Sanhedrin (Rabbinical high court), Jesus was thrown off a roof to his death and his body then displayed on a T-shaped frame. "Not like the nonsense in the Christian legend about the poor man being nailed to a cross."

Benizri confirmed his statement yesterday: "What's there to deny? The Jews did kill Jesus. He was a yeshiva student who abandoned Judaism, and the Sanhedrin had him executed."

Under Roman law, the Jewish authorities were forbidden from carring out capital punishment - this was reserved for the Roman government. This is well known and well documented. They were required to hand over any person convicted in their courts of a capital offense to the Roman authorities for capital punishment. The Romans had the final say.

Now, it is conceivable that they (the Sanhedrin) might occasionally carry out capital punishment when the prying eyes of Rome were not around; but there is NO WAY they would have tried it in Jerusalem when Pilate was in town for the feast.

I don't buy it one bit because having Pilate in town would have forced them to play it by the book.

Not only that, there are numerous extra-biblical sources that confirm that Jesus was indeed crucified. Rabbi Shlomo Benizri is just looking for his two-minutes of fame by spouting off bad history. You don't even have to get into a religious debate to see this guy is way off the mark.

To whom much is given, much is expected.

Yes, a small minority convened a kangaroo court and did that, but it was also foretold, and destine. In other words, it had to happen, so what's the issue?[;)]

Having not been there, it becomes a matter of faith. The apostle Thomas was there and didn't believe Christ had risen until he put his hand on Christ's punctured hand. It is a matter of faith what Christians believe, The Jews do not believe christ was the Savior. Since the Rabbi wasn't there and has no faith in Christ, he doesn't really know what happened does he and has no reason to believe otherwise.

The devil loves this blame game, it takes attention from more important aspects of this film.

Christ was put here to absorb our sins. It was his destiny. If it wasn't one group that did it, it would have been another.

It's not who did it(we all did), it's who it was done for (us).
