Some cicadas produce sounds up to 120 dB (SPL)[6] "at close range", among the loudest of all insect-produced sounds.

belive there are 3, 10 and 17 year kay-de-dids. This is the 17 year version in North central PA. Supposed to last about 30 days total till they all mate and lay eggs in tree bark. When the eggs hatch the larve? fall to the ground and dig in until they mature in 3 , 10 or 17 years. There are some that hatch every year just some years more than others.

I was at Dale Hollow lake a couple weeks ago and they are Cicadas. And they were very loud.
We would get up in the morning and there would be dozens of the "shells" on our tires.

Look up on the net for some good recipes.[xx(][xx(][xx(][xx(]
    No really they're eatible.

i knew a guy that would bite their heads off and eat them raw

while they are 17 year locust, they do show up every year in some places, they are not all on the same 17 year cycle, we used to tie thread to one foot, and fly them around

I always thought the zithering of the annual cicada on a warm summer afternoon was a comforting, sleepy sort of sound.

    cicada006F.jpg

They crawl out of the ground looking like this.

    Then they break out.

Here it is resting, waiting for its wings to dry so it can fly away.

We have them here in the NC mountains and the noise is unbelievable!

Here is a thread from a few days ago. I posted a map of where this particular species of cicadas is, also a good link there with photos of these bugs etc.

There are 14 different species of 17 year cicadas, so this species won't bother you again until 2025. Next year, another species will hatch in several other states, etc.
Mostly located east of the Mississippi River.

I like to listen to those small swamp frogs when they sing at times. But they can get annoying.

I like the little critters. They are nice to listen to at times and they do not seem as bad this year as they did the last time they were out. Also make great Catfish and Bass bait.

They are three types of them. Some come out every seven years, some at eight to ten. The ones that come out every eight to ten years around here are not much bigger than a house fly and make no noise at all. Then we have the ones out now that come out about every fourteen.

When they peak. They can make mowing, weed eating or doing anything with a small engine miserable swam ya like you have kicked a Yellow Jackets nest.

They live in the ground and about every seven years come out enmass. They crawl up high into the trees and then start making that very loud, annoying "buzzing" sound. You get used to it after awhile. They can be fun to hunt with an air or bb gun with a telescopic sight (they are small and high in the tree) so go out and put an end to their annoying buzzing while having fun.

Cicada's, and we have them every year here in Texas. They are music to some folks ears.

When we were kids, we would catch them and tie thread to their legs. Then we would fly them around until they got tired, let them go and go catch a fresh one!
