Could any pumpkin carving possibly be in poorer taste?

(As art; it's a pretty good carving.)

As far as technique is concerned, it's well executed, but the subject seems inappropriate for the medium.

That's what I thought too, but then again, I'm not an atheist...

Is it just me, or does the pumpkin with the Bush Cheney sign contain an uncarved part suspended in mid-air? (Look within the circle -- there is nothing supporting the inside.) Unless they're using fishing wire, this could be a Photoshop job.

I believe if you look closely at the John Scary pumpkin, it will reveal the secret ... the pumpkin skin is just scored and the dark orange peal it lifted off ... without actually cutting through the pumpkin!
And all this time I thought you were so insightful ... [}:)]

Well, these are in fairly poor taste:

I don't think that's the case with these pumpkins. I've used that technique before (to create pumpkins with multiple layers of shading), and the shapes are too bright to have been merely scored. Not to mention the difficulty of evenly scoring all the shapes so that the brightness is equal across the entire form. The only one that looks like it has been scored is the Cheney pumpkin, because you can still see the lines.
Also, there are no shadows. If you look at pictures of carved pumpkins (even with a steady light source such as a flashlight), you will see darker parts along the edges where the pumpkin has actually been cut through. (The cleavage pumpkin shows this pretty clearly.)
I still think that these designs have either been painted or done with some kind of imaging software.

Okay, why? It has an obvious meaning to the one who carved it, yet you are offended. I'm not offended, and I don't see what the poor taste is when you connect a terrible event with a faith to help you heal, but I'm sure you can explain where my error in judgement is.
How you doin'!

I'm not offended, but I consider it to be in poor taste, because it is carved on a pumpkin. Pumpkins are not an appropriate medium for serious subject matter. When you think of jack-o-lanterns, you think of funny faces and other traditional Halloween fare, not political and religious dogma.

Some say Halloween is, in its own way, a religious dogma, but I won't argue that point.
I can see why you don't like it after you explained your view of Halloween and pumpkin carving, but I would be more inclined to call it odd taste rather than poor taste. It evidently was important to the carver, so I respect his/her artistic abilities even if I don't understand the medium he/she used. I am more stunned at the ability (and yours in the other post) because I couldn't carve a hole in a pumpkin without messing it up.
Hope your not knocking it just because it's religious in nature. I doubt you are that closed minded.[;)]

If it were a painting, it wouldn't bother me. It just seems like it doesn't fit on a pumpkin. Ditto for election year pumpkin carvings (although Kerry can be considered a vampire).

My experience with most artist is, they seem to walk to the beat of a different drummer. Who can figure them out? Not me! My wife has painted oil paintings for 38 years. In art, 2+2 doesn't always equal 4.[:D]
PS, she likes the art you post here. She and I both think you are very talented.[;)]
