My daughter called me (oldest) 21 she lives on her own she was upset, seems her FASA form would indicate her parents (me) should fund her college up to 26K a year and THEN Uncle Sam would start to help, even though she lives on her own Uncle seems to like using my income for her education aide??!! Funny after taxes, health insurance (WHICH SHE CAN NOT BE ON ANYMORE because she is over 21!!!??) and 401K since Uncle has warned me he will be broke and don't count on him for SSI that I pay 7.5% of, Uncle Sam must be nuts! She can't use lottery money because she has an associates degree so she has to borrow money, Uncle is a Jerk how the hell can it be fair I can't claim her as a dependent but he can use my income to deny her benefits, Weird part is I said so if you went to a scholl that costs 45K a year and I pay 26 Uncle would pay the difference but 1700 a semester I will now have to fork out so the kid can get her Bachelors and teach. ARRGHH YA SAY YA WANT A REVOLUTION YEA YEA
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

Spose I could have had her put down she was Black, Muslim or illegal alien and she probably would have gotten some assistance

I was once told by a guy from a large government agency (he was 1/2 joking), that if he ever had to apply for any sort of government approved aid, he would put that he was a minority in every field possible.

His reasoning was it would be discrimination for them to tell him he was not "african" enough to be an "african American", or "not gay enough" for him to be "gay" etc. etc.

Again, he was only 1/2 joking, but it was an entertaining thought.

There is lots of money for college out there, if you can be aggressive and look for it. Don't give up just yet. If she wants to go to school you will be able to find a way.

Get a loan,........someone has to pay it back.
Do you feel my tax dollars should be used for your daughters education?
    I don't think so!

Neither of you qualify,......get over it.
Either help her, or let her take a loan, and pay it back.
Where did the idea of FREE college educations come from?[xx(]

Its FASFA, not FASA. Uncle Sam won't give anybody 26K a year to go to college. The max Pell Grant is 4000, the max subsidized Staford federal loan varies by year, but maxes out at 5500, and is less then that if you are a sophomore or freshman. So even if you get the max on everything from the government you only have 9500, if you get a unsubsidized Stafford loan, thats another 5500 max per year so now your up to $15000. Every person that goes to college can get a Stafford loan, it doesn't matter what the family income is.

So you are left with a lot of money to pay. If the school isn't going to help her out with any financial aid, then I think you should talk to the school financial aid department. If its a private school, you can get some money from them by just talking to them. They want people to go to school there, if you can't afford it they can and will help you out if you negotiate. If its a public school your SOL.

Next thing would be private loans, theres a lot out there, but money is tight in the financial sector. She will need a cosigner.

Last thing, if she is paying 45K a year to go to school and taking out loans for it, make sure its in a field that is going to pay when she gets out. There is absolutely no sense in someone spending 45K a year to graduate and make 40K a year.

I paid to put my children through school. Never asked for anyone, including the tax payers to chip in.
