What I learned about case prep

i used to be one of those guys that ran the brass through the sizer, pushed a primer into the back, charged, seated a chunk of lead and away to the range. I have found out that the "one ragged hole dream" is much farther away than that. I think it is somewhere in the prep process. I tried some of the serious reloader stuff this weekend and now see the error of my ways.

Case neck runout; I am down to between .001 to .002. I achieved this with a neck turning tool and die adjustment.

Primer pockets; all are now uniform and primers no longer flatten.

Neck size only; fireforming is da bomb!

Oal; my .308 bullets are .020 longer than the book calls for! Is that normal?

Is there anything else I should know about the diet I am now serving my .308? Should I go with Norma brass? Hornady Match? Any suggestions?

I hope to hear from GHD and Varmit Hunter on this, them guys are awesome.

    Hi Will;
    You might try de-burring the flash holes (inside the cases), it's time consuming but sure helps.

    I was going to add the same thing as vet, But you are on top of that. The extra time spent at the loading bench pays off at the shooting bench. Sounds like you are on top of it. Check out www.snipers paradice.com for some real serious stuff.

    I'll check it out. I just ordered the Case Prep center from RCBS, it's got to be better than reaming them primer pockes by hand. Ouch!!

    Varmint,
    I got a Sinclar primer pocket reamer with the 1/4" drive adaptor ... put it in my screwdriver/drill or drill press and uniforming pockets is a snap ... same with flash hole uniforming/deburring and another attachment for chamfering the I.D./O.D. of the neck. I've had all three for along time (about $25 for all 3) but I'm pretty sure I got them from Brownells.

    I've thought about the RCBS prep station but the seprate tools and cordless screwdriver/drill is more flexable in that I'm not stuck at the loading bench for all that monotonous/tedious work.

    Thanks Kimber I am going to check that out. I like things that are power operated(old and lazy).
