I would think $200-$250 would be fair to the family...and you would have one heck of a rabbit-hunting gun!If I recall, the choke is marked in code symbols on the barrel. You need to learn the code. Most likely, the Light-Twenty is either modified or improved cylinder choked.P.S. I sure would like to buy what you describe for $250. But I don't think I would go any higher.

rafter-s probably knows more than i do but at approx. 85% i would belive this gun to be worth more than $250. i can say that there is no way you could go into a gun store and purchase any browning shotgun especially an AUTO 5 for any less than $350 in almost any condition, $250 is way too low in my opinion.

jdb-- I'm glad you responded because it offers me a chance to elaborate. What a gun store marks a gun and what it is worth are two different things. The gun store that buys an 85% A5 without screw-in chokes will offer $150-$175...maybe $200 on a good day. Then they will mark it $300-$375 depending on the clientel they have. If Coonass offers the family $200-$250 for the gun he will be offering them more than any store will. His offer will also save them the hassle of trying to sell it on the open market, which is a whole different subject, filled with potential disasters.

Why dont you just tell them about the auction site if you want to be fair, you could sell it for them. Unless, that is, you REALLY want it, then go ahead and buy it. I wouldnt get too worked up about it, being fair I mean, cause it seems odd someone would sell off their father's, husband's gun right after hes dies, guess I'm more sentimental than some. I wouldnt sell of my dad's guns right after he died, it'd be all I have left of him. If its money they're after make an offer, they can take it or leave it. I know, sounds kind of harsh, but thats just my opinion.

Coonass--I had an elderly friend who wanted me to buy his guns from him--he knew I would give a fair price. And I knew that someday, after he was gone, his family would look back and likely accuse me of taking advantage of him. (He had several nephews who wanted the guns as gifts.) So what he and I did was drive to 3 different gun stores one Saturday morning and took the guns in as if we were trying to sell them. In the end, his highest offer was $1200. I paid him $1500. He and I were both satisfied with the deal...and he mentioned it to several of his family members what a deal he had gotten. You might want to consider doing something similar with your friend's widow.

The Blue Book puts it at about $270 in 85% condition. But then again the Blue Book is giving a retail price and not what a dealer or pawn shop would give. Sounds like it is in worse than 85% to me.

Living in a small town.I have ben in this situation several times.Rafte-s has very good advice. It is the same as I follow.Take someone from the family with you. Then offer more.If you get it there are several no cost things you can do to improve the apperence.A 26" barrel is normaly a imp-cylender.If you look under the barrel you should see one or two astrics.I think, But not sure one is imp-cyl,Two means modified.
