Had to share this with all you guys....I'm taking my boy out to the range tomorrow to let him shoot the most efficient close range people killer ever made. I just bought an original WWI Winchester Model 1897 trench gun. Even though I bought it as an investment(yeah right!) I'm going to let my son shoot it so he can see the devastating impact that OO buckshot has on things at close range... maybe it will get him to understand why his daddy prefers stand off shooting!! In any case while I'm not prepared to get rid of my match rifles this trench gun has some real potential for clean fun!! Beach

P.S. Actually our local museum is gearing up for a WWI Centennial and I want one of the doughboys on display to be outfitted with the 1917 trench weapon of choice! If it makes the museum I'll let you guys know. Beach

If you could only have one gun...............................

    That could fill the need.

But for what you paid for it, I bet you could have had another nice match rifle

Beach, since you are into dropping cash, Epay has a couple 1917 bayos, bring money

Varmintmist....already have one on reserve. Once I replenish my coffers(the trench gun sure did deplete them) I have one made prior to 1918 with all correct markings in very near mint condition with scabbard to attach to the bayonet mount. Beach

What is cool is to hold down the trigger and pump the slide. Better hold on tight.

Beach, listen to David. I have a M97 cut to 18.25" which a great uncle used for attitude adjustment purposes in MN. Putting that on the hip with a full mag of GI 00 buck, holding the trigger and pumping is an "interesting" experience. I keep it handy.

Interestingly, it was originally a full choke and still patterns well, although certainly *not* full! I took a bunch of birds with it when I was in grade school.

Best looking shotgun ever made, with the bayo lug the meanest looking too. Just my opinion ;)

Well guys I'm just back from the range. I took my 14 year old boy and his buddy out there. Put 35 rounds of buck shot down range and did a little pumping with the trigger held down....bowling pins flying everywhere!!!! I've go to admit I was impressed. My boy and his friend also had a blast, literally and figuratively. I can't wait to attach the bayonet to this baby! Somehow X-Rings don't seem quite as exciting as they once were. Beach

Beach, That kind of shooting, Just gives you a warm fuzzy fealing. I think that is the meanest looking gun they ever made. Even more than the Thompson.
