Handgun laws in New Mexico. Need info

I have a CCP in the great state of Texas I live in. The family and I are planning a trip to Red River in the near future and I already know New Mexico is not a conceled carry state.

What are the laws for travelers with a handgun in New Mexico? If by some chance I get stopped and they run my license number, will they know I have a CCP or do they only have records in that state?

Thanks for your replys in advance.

Maybe this will help. Hope so. I didn't get a chance to read it. Babysitting grandkids, you know. Good luck on the trip.

Thanks Muley. I knew I could get help on this site. The way I read it, as long as it is in a private automobile it is not considered unlawful carry.

If anybody reads it different, please say so. The way they word this stuff it is almost impossible to be certain.

    WAIT!!!

It helps to read farther than the first column!! I made the mistake of just reading the "deadly weapon" part. There is another section related just to handguns. Now as I read it, I can't carry it even if it is in the luggage in the back of my SUV.

So, is there a place to check it as I pull in to New Mexico?

Loan Shark....You're right. Thats how I read it too. I can't see any provision for just transporting a handgun through the state while on vacation. The federal regs say you can transport one if it is in a locked container with ammo somewhere not readily available, but they always bow to the particular states regulations if they are more stringent. I think you should call a law enforcement agency in NM and ask them. Maybe someone else can read this regs and interpret them differently.

In new mex. Your car is an extenion of your home you are allowed to carry a concealed firearm on your property (which includes "means of personal conveyance"car, donkey, bi-cyle). Also if you are stopped you can refuse to be searched, to lawfully search your vehicle , the police must either place you underarrest or have a search warrant, suspicion is not enough. Although I have never tested out that part of the law.

As far as your ccp goes, it is not honored here concealed is not allowed except for LEO's .Opencarry only. Which you rarely see anybody with a gun, Your better off just leaving it in your car.

You guys were reading the law wrong. Its stupid how it is written, they write the law first, then they write the exceptions then, give the definitions of the terms used. At the very end of 30-7-2.2 it gives the def. of "persons" if you add that to everything you just read,it changes every thing. I hope this helps.......lazy

Thanks again guys. I think I will take the law, as it is wrtten, to a good defense attorney friend of mine and see what he says. I also plan to call the local LEO in Red River and ask his opinion.

Back to my original post, if he runs my drivers license, will he know I have a CCL? Do states share that type of information?
