13fister gave me a cast-iron cookware set and now we are thinking about a camping trip in March with a buddy of his. I know there are plenty of cast-iron cookware recipes out there but I was wondering if anyone here had a few of their own that they'd like to share.Proud Privately Practicing Parishoner of the PVM

Get pan hot. Throw in food. Drink another beer. Eat hot food.

Don't put it in the dishwasher and don't scrub it with steel wool. Smear all interiors with lard and leave it in the oven overnight on the lowest setting. You may have to do this periodically if you see rust. If you keep the cast iron conditioned this way, it'll make teflon look sticky.

Take spatchula and scrap out grease and wipe clean, Note Never use soap when cleaning or after cooking in it, Just wipe with a terry cloth. Ignore those other methods. To season a new cast iron pan, coat it heavily with crisco, let it set for 24 hours and then heat it in the oven at 350 deg. Swab out excess grease after it has melted.NEVER clean it with water or soap. If you get a stickey mess, there are 2 good ways to clean it. Best is to leave it overnight, upside down over a big red ant nest. Next best is to use salt as an abrasive to clean the pan.I like to make corn bread and cakes in 'em Use a smaller one (4 qt?) for corn bread while the chili is cooking in the big 'un. Mmmmm, almost makes me want to go out in the snow and make camp.

Use lard or bacon grease for seasoning, not vegetable shortening. I don't know why it makes a difference, but it seems to work better with the animal fat.

I hope you're camping out the back of a truck or camper. If you're hiking, throw it away and buy aluminum.

I don't know about any of this. I have such a skillet and I have used soap and water, and vegetable oil. Thing still works great. Just make sure you dry it immediately.

Clean the protective coat of oil off using soap and/or a Brillo pad. Dry it well. Coat with vegetable oil, olive oil works well but Crisco is easier to apply. Condition by putting it in a 325 degree oven for about an hour. It will smoke and stink so if you have a B-B-Q do it outside. Let it cool until you can handle it and then wipe the inside with plain water and paper towels. Dry. Store with a wad of dry paper towels in the oven with some lapping over the edge to keep the lid slightly ajar. If you see any rust in subsequent uses, season it again. Clean after use by putting about an inch or so of water in the oven, slapping the lid on and go eat. This will free any stuff stuck to the sides. Let it cool and wipe clean. If you use animal fat, it will eventually go rancid. Re-season. Clouder..[This message has been edited by whiteclouder (edited 01-08-2002).]

Usually I can just wipe mine clean. But for stubborn stuff I use plain water and a Scotch Brite pad. Never use soap!! Immediatly put on a hot burner to dry. Then wipe with a paper towel with vegitable oil on it. I keep a plastic container, with a oily paper towel in it, right near the stove.
