London-AP -- Along with the white collar -- some British priests are wearing black belts.Clergymen are taking martial arts classes to protect themselves from irate parishioners and other dangers of modern life.Some priests from the Church of England are enrolling in tae kwon do (ty kwahn doh) classes after a survey of 13-hundred clergy in southeast England found that 12 percent had been assaulted, 22 percent threatened with violence and 70 percent subjected to verbal abuse.The union that represents Church of England clergy says it's a "sad fact of modern life" that some clergy will become victims of violence.Assailants have included homeless people, parishioners angry about not getting the dates they wanted for weddings or baptisms and opponents of women priests.[Didn't know clergy was unionized?]
