Training bees

Missoula, Montana-AP -- Researchers at the University of Montana have a new suggestion for finding (m) millions of unexploded land mines.

Use honeybees.

The bees are said to be easier to train, harder-working and more accurate than bomb-sniffing dogs.

And for two years, researchers say the bees have been finding simulated land mines that smell like the real thing.

So far, they have a near-perfect track record.

The United Nations estimates about 110 (m) million unexploded land mines are located around the world -- and that each year about 26-thousand people are killed or maimed by the hidden bombs

This is a great oportunity for the government to seek out terrorists in our country. Just train the bees to seek out the stench of some of the food that terrorists traditionally eat. Like Baklava or Kibbeh, etc. Then these bees could be bred with Africanized killer bees and the problem would be solved. One note of caution, though. Timing is everything because soon after they sneak into this country and start eating at McDonalds, the Quarter Pounders will purge their systems and the smell of Baba Ghanoush will disappear.

Hmmm, since I am fond of Baklava, I would have to propose we then train vultures to sniff out quarter pounders and catch the terrorists that way.

Hmmmm, aren't you supposed to keep pets or animals in a leech or chain ??
Haven't heard of a bee coming back when you call....
But I'd like to see that sometime.

Hehe.. nah, just being a little bit unserious here. =o)
I believe that bees have a great potential - but I'd recon that their short lives will pose a problem. Most bees lives around 3 months. !!
("work"-bees lives around 3-4 months, "soldiers" around 3-6 months and the Queen several seasons.)

PS : Grew up with a bee-keeper nextdoor - always had the best fresh honey made from the local variety of flowers.
The honey was really dark and firm - tasted YUMMMYYY !!
(DARN, better call him, and make him send a few glasses of it up here.. no bees on Greenland. other than .17Bee !!)

Oh man, you reminded me of a time once in Chicago; I caught a cab at the railroad station - I SWEAR TO GOD the cab smelled like the driver'd stuffed a 3-week old dead goat under the seat in front. Either that or there's some holy purpose in not bathing more than once a year in their twisted religious view.

spclark, you should be more sensitive to other cultures and their mores. That was just a bit of perfume he got kissing his wife good-bye that morning.
