    Don't waste your money.
they work great for painting bldgs and signs, very poor choice for treework. the upper boom does not articulate over center, you have to park it under the tree, then you can't get up through the limbs. If it says 40 feet high, it will never reach it because you must stay over the platform, no reachouts allowed, no stand straight ups alowed, it cuts hyd pressure to all valves except the one it wants you to use, the one that brings you back down.
The rental yard here is selling some of theirs, $5K for a used 40 footer, save your money, buy what you need.

As a side note, what qualifications do you have that would make you want to start trimming trees? I'm sure you know that this is a high risk occupation best left to the professionals. Among other things, liability insurance (required) will run about 10K per year, city and state permits, around $500 a year, workers comp, ect.
This is also hot, heavy work. As for being retired, I hope you are retired at 40, because most guys don't make it past that in this work unless they make supervisor and are not subjecting their bodies to this torture everyday. What about the trees you can't access with a bucket, on average, thats about 60% of all you will look at. Can you climb? Osha requires a person on the ground at all times while a man is aloft (bucket or climbing) for safety and emergency rescue. Are you line clearance certified? If not, you cannot be within 10 feet of a line (of any kind) or touch anything that extends to within 10 feet, sometimes this is the entire tree. Do you have a chipper and dump? what will you do with the debris? Dump fees will run you more than you will make off a job, and construction dumps *usually* do not allow soft fill.
We always loose 2-5 men around here every year. paper reads "tree trimmer killed", but its really just 65-70 year old jack(a$$es) of all trades that don't have sense enough to know when they are beat before they ever start. Not calling you names personally, just describing the norm.
I've done this for 15 years now, recently acquired a BS in AG Sciences and am an ISA certified arborist, certified tree worker, certified utility specialist, certified PHC tech and tree company owner. Many days I must rely on my backgroung of ropeing, rigging and climbing to handle situations, even as the owner with climbing employees, I still get up in a few trees a week to stay fresh. Many things look simple from the ground, but are not so once you get aloft.
Not trying to dissuade you, but *if* you have no experience or formal training in treework, you'd make more money mowing lawns. One cemetary I handle here for the twp pays $850 a cut, takes 2 guys 8 hours to do, thats more than most folks bring home a week, you can make it in a day, and take the other 6 days off, and make $650-$700 for the week. Florida mows year round, right?

If your dead set, try http://www.treetrader.com/ go to classifieds, a 35-40 foot squirt boom on a one ton will do more than a trailer lift anyday, for the same money. Just a little higher on tags and insurance.

    I'm at http://www.begleytreelandscaping.com/
If I can be of any help, I can be contacted thrugh this site (GB) or through my website contact page.

Thanks for the advise, I have been doing hard labour for the past 25yrs. I still work cows, built fences etc I have built polo grounds for the last 10yrs all over the world .I also have a Ag degree.Things are a little different here in South FLA 99% of the work will be with palms a whole different animal You don't have to get between any limbs .My former company had a tree spade mounted on 950cat loader and a 65' highranger. Years ago couple of us Supervisors where sent to Asphlund for training and certification , we are sent back yearly. There will be no climbing involved, A personal friend of mine who is in the Tree Bus.Had suggested this to me .He has 3 Bucket trucks and donig alot of work for So Fla Water Managment, and he has to turn away so much small work he made the suggestion and since I all ready have a Echo PPT Power pruner Speed Sharp chain Grinder,Breaker and Spinners, Echo CS-341 14",Huskey 359 20",and a Huskey 350,18"No to mention couple of thousand worth small acc. a 3910 Ford w/bucket etc etc. The county pickes up all debris from home owner it in ther garbage fee.
Mowing lawns: yes Florida does mow all year, in the growing season every three dayes on what we call grass(Bahia ,Floratam are both cultivated weeds) On turf (bermuda 419 460 etc,) every other day
thats on Polo , football, baseball, all professonal fields. Now this time of year maybe 1 time a week this also depends on how you Fertilize and Water. I know what must have went thru your head ,Oh No not another one,I assure you that I am not the average goof ball.I am a well train proffesional .The problem is that I have had 8 operations and a host of wire and hardware in arm and shoulderThe problem is I cannot get Worker comp insurance,Health, Libility,Life are a problem ,The won't insure me. I am also doing consulting for my former ,But I an one of those guys THAT HAS TO BE DOING SOMETHINGBut thanks for you imput,I have always liked people who tell it like it is ,up front

A guy cut a tree down reght beside our trailer. He trimmed off all the branches as he went up and then cut the tree, in sections, off as he came back down. Took him about a hour. The traa was a pine about 60 to 70 feet high. Not sure how much he charged, but it was abou $200.00 Can. We had to do cleanup though.

Frank, check this site out. neat idea, pricey though. I like the end jib, allows for reach in and over. A 198 foot reach with a 14 x 14 footprint sounds shakey to me, but I've never run one of these. -Ralph
