Got a beef with UPS/Cabela's

I ordered a Colt Walker black powder revolver for my father-in-law a few days ago from Cabela's. Well, I waited a few days, and since I hardly leave the house through the front door (I use the garage, mostly), imagine my suprise when my brother rolls up to my door this morning with a package from Cabela's. It was the pistol.1) It's Sunday today, which means the pistol was delivered yesterday. The UPS man left a firearm on my front door step, overnight, and didn't have the common courtesy to knock (I was home all day because I have the flu).2) It's been raining here in MO, so this package spent all night outside, in the rain, unsecured. Luckily, the piece was wrapped in plastic so wasn't exposed to water.Imagine my chagrin if that pistol had been stolen from my front door step! Anybody have any similar experiences?Brian

UPS can do that because your black powder isn't actually classified as a "firearm". Technically, it might as well be a Teddt Bear for how UPS would classify it and handle it. Don't get upset with Cabelas. Call your local UPS office and raise Hell. They're not the federally sponsored Post Office, so they will take your complaint and run with it.

A couple of years ago I ordered a new Fender guitar amplifier from a catalogue outfit that uses UPS exclusively. The company I bought it from wouldn't ship to my work address, they'd only ship to my credit card billing (home) address. (some * company policy)Imagine my glee when I arrived home from work one evening and found my thousand-dollar amplifier sitting in my driveway in the pouring rain. Been there for hours, I guess, since the heavy cardboard box was soaked all the way through. The UPS driver left it out in the open just 15 feet from a covered entry way. Too busy, or too limp-wristed, to drag it another five yards. As it turned out, the dampness didn't really matter. I opened the box to find that the thing had been dropped hard at some point on its trip from southern Oregon and the amp frame was broken wide open. Completely ruined. What'd UPS have to say about the problem?"Are you sure you didn't break it moving it into the house?"Yeah, right, it accidently fell off the roof while moving it from the driveway to the house.I sent it back where I bought it and the music company sent me a new one. This time, at my request, via Federal Express. Arrived in perfect shape and I picked it up at the FedEx store after they politely called to tell me it was in and to ask if I wanted it delivered.I get UPS freight on a daily basis where I work and I'll bet 9 out of every 10 packages coming off the truck are beat to hell. Ripped open, sides stove-in...if it's breakable, they'll break it.With their habit of just leaving freight on your porch, or in your driveway, or front steps, I'm guessing there is a lot of stuff stolen. Of course, that's now your problem, since it was just fine when the driver left.

Sounds to me that you guys got some stupid and /or lazy drivers.I think that to throw a blanket over all UPS drivers for the shortcomings of a few is unfair. Our driver will go out of his way to deliver every package to us the day it gets in his truck.Hell if there is no one home at my house and the package needs a signature he will drive clear cross town and give it to my brother, and when he leaves any package he leaves it exactly where I asked him to,many drivers will do this kind of thing if you just talk to them. The only time I get a problem is when the regular guy is on vacation or out sick and someone covers for him.Now I do agree that every profession has its'share of numbnuts to say they all are bad is not fair, when my father was suffering from Diabetes he got his insulin via UPS and allthough the insulin never was shipped priority he would deliver it first thing in the morning to be sure my dad got it,just my $.02,Josey

Ya know I love in MO too redleg, and I have had good experiences with UPS. Its the only way I get anything delivered in a timely manner. Our UPS guy knows my car and truck cause theyre sort of old and one of a kind. He will stop me going down the road and give me my packages when he sees me, just to get them to me quicker, cause he knows its for soemthing gun oriented most of the time. They do leave things on the door step a lot, but at least they make it to the porch. And both our USPS and Fed Ex drivers will go out of their way also to give something to our neighbors so we can get it from them instead of going to the post office. I guess you just got the 'bad' luck of the draw.

at least the packages got delivered- if you lived in chicago, you look for your mail under abandoned buildings or ash heaps. or, if you know the mailman, at the bar he drinks at on his route...and you look forward to going to the post office slightly more than going to the dentist. its funny- at the post office, they talk like i do when i have the dentists hand stuffed in my mouth. All of us that have and order guns should be complaining about UPS and their stand on RED lable shipping of handguns. Out here we pay red price and get ground service. Also they have asigned their own address to buildings in small towns and if you don't know the address, they tack on $20.00 for not having the address they want. There is more but you get the point, and that is BOYCOT!

In US territory they have become TAX collectors against US constitution plus they keep track of all you receive , they are big brother helpers ... some day you will need an upc code tatued in your arm or forehead with the number 666 in order to have anything delivered to you.

Orphanedcowboy, The union remark was not intended toward all union members. But since we are on the subject now, how many union jobs was lost to Mexico and Canada because of union strikes and inflated pay for less? The big buster brown strike (ups) a while back ,what results did they get from that? Listen you can say what you want but I deal with teamsters every day and union dock workers and I'll tell you for a non union man I get the short end of the stick quite often. I went to a job site in NY last year and they would not unload my truck because I'm not a union member I had to drive all the way back to Albany to get the truck unloaded onto teamster trucks, they then took it 150 miles back north to the union site. Who paid for that?? ME! I'm an owner operator and that cost me more money than what I made on the load. I see every day what the priorities are for most of them and all they say is "me me me". There are some good ones out there but the ones I deal with are not so nice. Sorry if I offended any one as I did not mean to. I saw first hand what ups is all about and I refuse to do any bussiness with them.

My dad makes it through Sioux City (where I live) on buisiness almost monthly. He knows the UPS guy that is assigned to my area and talks with him on occasion. He told my dad, "yeah, I delivered a whole crate of ammo to him just the other day. He's the guy with the green Toyota pickup truck right?" Thanks for the privacy Mr. UPS man. Why don't you tell the whole world about it? Fortunately I brought my dad over from the dark side with regards to the firearms issue long ago so I didn't have to take the crap that I would have taken several years ago. Even so, the UPS man shouldn't be rattling on to everyone under the sun what he delivers to your house.

For 20+ years, I had the same UPS driver. He took some shortcuts - like leaving packages at businesses (or at my place) rather than go down a dirt road where he couldn't turn around - but he really made an effort to be sure packages were delivered safely. BUT I've had others who were doing me a favor to toss the packages off the back of the truck as they rolled through the yrad. Same thing w/ USPS, FedEx, etc. Some people make an effort, many don't. Orphan, thank you for caring. Unfortunately, I see that as the minority approach. Redleg, what does seem to help, though, is to call up HQ & complain politely, but most firmly; the common carriers don't like that negative publicity. USPS . . . don't get me started - in my experience, there's typically one person in a given office who gives a damn / has a clue, and often that's only because they are part time and have a real job on the outside where they have been exposed to the concept doing more than punching the time clock.

UPS does not care a bit what you think, so go ahead and complain. I have complained, and as long as I can talk directly with my local driver, I can get my point across. To talk to his boss or any manager in UPS is a waste of time. One manager told me that he did not care what I think and that I could call his boss and be told the same thing. They insist that you buy the insurance, but if you have a claim, they will always claim you broke it.

UPS driver who came to my old place of work was something else: She was union, had the stickers all over everything, and looked tough enough to spit nails. I'd smile every time I saw her and ask how she was doing, and she'd grunt and go right on her way. Friendly as could be! To her credit, though, she got the stuff there early and took it to the right place. Did everything by the book. Sort of miss seeing her in an odd way.

Like many of you, I've found that with UPS and FedEx, it all depends on who you talk to.The delivery guys are usually, pretty OK 'cause you're face to face with them. It's the phone people I have trouble with. When I got my "land yacht" the check from the credit union was sent FedEx. I called them to see if I could have it held at the terminal so I wouldn't have to sit home all day and wait for it. On my first call, the package hadn't been entered into their tracking system yet, but I asked the guy if I could have it held. He said: "Sure! No problemo! Once it gets into the system we can do anything you want with it." Second call....package was in the system but I got a totally different answer."Oh no. We MUST attempt a delivery before we can hold it at the terminal." After a short discussion, it was obvious she was in the "go by the book" mode and I wasn't going to change her attitude. OK....third call. Same question...."Sure! No problemo!. I'm gonna' put you on hold while I call the terminal and get them to hold it." I'm on hold. "OK. Everythings set up. Pick it up anytime after 9AM tomorrow." There's customer service and then there's attitude. It all depends on who you talk to.Mudge the customer ps. DON'T get me started on unions!!!!!

Two stories that involved the same UPS driver and home deliveries come to mind. The first situation involved the delivery of 2500 rds. of .45 ACP. I came home early that day and found three large boxes on my front porch clearly marked "Small Arms Ammunition" The driver dumped them off and left. The second situation involved an HK USP .40 compact pistol. I had sent it to the factory for some minor repairs and upon arriving home, there it was on my front stoop. A signature card was attatched. My wife was home both times...no knock, nothing....I called and complained both times, the second time, I received a call from a supervisor who indicated the driver was "repremanded" whatever that means.I avoid using UPS whenever possible....

UPS routinely leaves packages on my porch, sometimes putting the mat over the package, to "hide" it. We have had UPS toss packages into the yard as they drive by. I will not use UPS if I have any choice. Ever.

Once again the advantages of a small town. Our UPS man is 1st rate. Knows just about everyone in town and where they work, dispite living 40 miles away. If you are not home he will drop it at your workplace or leave it with your wifes workplace (not always desireable) or with a friend.

It appears that the problem with UPS is that there are no hard and fast rules with them. Ask ten UPS employees a question, you will get ten different answers. However; the drivers that serve our small town are great people. If we are gone when they deliver we will always find the package in our other vehicle, out of the weather.
