A rare Colt revolver discovered after the death of the elderly woman who owned it has turned out to be worth more than twice as much as her house. The beautifully engraved Colt Paterson percussion revolver, which was made in the United States in about 1840, is expected to fetch up to ?120,000 when it is auctioned at Bonhams in London on July 24.

The terrace house in an unnamed town in the North of England, where the woman lived alone, is only thought to be worth about ?50,000.

The revolver, in superb condition in its original presentation box with accessories such as a bullet mould and a cleaning rod, was discovered when Bonhams was asked to clear the house of the woman's possessions following her death.

Although not firearms experts, Bonhams local representatives thought the revolver looked sufficiently interesting to be worth sending to the auction house's headquarters in Knightsbridge.
