Finally changed my oil last night. Usually do it every 3500 to 4000 miles. This time I went a little longer. Not on purpose though. What's the longest some of you have gone?

7500 miles! (Government vehicle) Can you believe it is still on the road today? Yes, 7500 was when it usually got changed.

I regularly go up to 7500. Read the maintience schedule and it says that if you don't drive a lot in the city, pull trailers, etc., every 7500 is recommended.

I had a friend who drove her Dodge Intrepid about 7500 miles before changing the oil. It was too late. The engine seized and Daimler-Chrysler is making her pay over $2500 to fix it. The worst part is, this is a leased vehicle and is due to be turned-in in August. She is fighting Chrysler, but in the meantime has been forced to buy another vehicle.

I always, without exception, change the oil in all of my vehicles at 3000 miles.

I'm an oil change pro, I have 30 trucks, tractors, combines, puckups. cars, Lawnwowers, 4-wheelers, and transfer-pumps on the farm that are running at different times of the year. Some have Hour meeters, most have odometers.
The most oil used is in the Cat 3406's,(10 gal). The least is probaly a transfer pump at 1 qt. sometimes when we get busy farming the cars and pickups get neglected and go way over the 3000 target.
I use Schaffer's specialized lubercants pure parifin based 30 wt motor oil in all the engines.Good stuff.
    Deisel engines - 100 hrs
    passenger cars & pickups - 3000 mi
    motorcycles,4-wheeler,pumps - once a year (Depends on Hr's)
I never add oil to a engine that does not use oil, if it is on add than it is time to change it.

I use Mobile 1 triple synthetic with the synthetic filter. The computer in the Suburban monitors highway and city miles, as well as viscosity and the message center tells you when the oil is in need of change. Can be anywhere from 3-4k to 7k miles. Dealer told me that the new synthetics are so good, you must break the bearings in with regular oil first, or the motor will have a hard time breaking in at all with the synthetic. He also told me GM recommends the synthetic lubes now and will NOT void the warranty. Go Figure.

In the hunting truck and others, if they are not daily drivers, I try to hit em maybe twice a year just be to sure they are clean.

    When in doubt...empty the magazine!!

The maintenance schedule for my wifes 98 Honda CR-V says to wait 7500 miles between changes. I couldn't force myself to wait that long after years of changing at 3000. So, I compromised. I use Mobil 1 full synthetic and change it at 5000. So far, so good.

Consumer Reports did a study a few years ago using New York Taxi fleet. This is gasoline cars. They found no statistical differance between oil changes done at 3,000 miles and 5,000 miles. The engine break down rate was the same for either oil change interval. They also found no statistical differances in oil brands either. Take it for whats it worth.
    Just my 2 cents worth.

Car companies sell cars, they say change at 7500
Oil companies sell oil, most say change at 2000
I change between 3500 and 4000 religiously. Father was a small contractor (asphalt) everything (road vechicles)got changed at 3000, equip. got changed on a time sced. (many nights in the old grease pit growing up) never siezed a engine, ever.

I use synthetic oil and nothing else. I change mine at 4,500 - 5,000.
My government vehicle (2001 Ford Taurus SE) gets its oil changed every 7,000 according to manufacturer recommendations. It's leased and Ford gets it back after 60,000.

    About 10K.

It was my sister's car, a '89 Accord. She never even thought about the oil until i asked her about it. When I changed it, the stuff came out like black syrup.

...okay, maybe not THAT thick, but it was still really bad

3000 miles between changes on my vehicles. - Castrol Syntec synthetic.

2000 miles on my Harley and an oil change in the spring, after the limited winter riding, regardless of how few miles on the oil. - Amsoil synthetic.

Well, I do CHECK the oil regularly. So long as oil is in the pan, I doubt the engine could seize. But when oil gets miles on it, it burns faster.

There have been a bunch of "wear" tests done on motor oil in automotive gasoline engines. The oil gets awfully dirty looking but test results show almost no difference in wear between changes at 5,000 miles vs. 7500 miles. Even though I know this, have seen the results myself, am a mechanical engineer who works with engines daily - I still change mine every 5,000 miles!? Guess I just don't like that dirty oil...

My government vehicle is leased from Ford. Ford is going to get it back after 60K miles. If changing the oil every 3K miles was such a big deal then why do they only require an oil change ever 7K miles? Those that tout the "every 3K" concept just want to promote the "Jiffy Lube" type businesses. Notice that there is almost no price difference when you bring in your own oil. Hence, they probably don't pay squat for the oil they put in your vehicle otherwise. Therefore, it makes sense for those guys to encourage following the "3K" rule.

Every 7000 miles in three different vehicles, I use mobile one and haven't had a problem yet! All vehicles have over 150 thousand on and counting. Yes the oil lookes dirty but when a head gasket blew the valve covers looked like new. And the engine was still tight! No scores on the cylinder walls and the cams looked great, had the valves checked out and they were fine also.

Change mine about every 2500......but there was this old 61 Chevy wagon I had once, 6 cylinder 3 speed that used a lot of oil....about 3-4 quarts per week....never did change it in over 10 years and about 80,000 miles....may have changed the filter twice.
