Take out the elk, and watch the flora rebound. After reduction, along streams, in areas where unnatural populations of deer and elk have innundated the natural setting, native trees and plants have rebounded, reducing erosion, and providing homes to all the animals and birds that used to live along these wetlands.

instead of shooting them they should use them to restore populations elsewhere add genetic diversity to other herds

The recent reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone thinned out the overabundant elk herd.
This was very helpful to the native flora, like Sperry said.

as a soon to be biologist in Wildlife management. It seems very use full to get rid of some extra animals they tend to cause a lot of damage. I do believe all the meat goes to good will or somewhere its not wasted. And scott you dont want to transplant animals unless you absolutly have to. Because what ever that animal has is going to go with it and maybe the other populations are not used to that and that could result in less genetic diversity.

Transplanting unless certified disease free not such a good idea.

Chrishiher -- agree that any species offered full protection without a natural predator further up the food chain can create serious problems?

I know it does. Have watched it too many times in our local national park.

If they would allow biologists to manage the herd, instead of the public, they would never have been in this situation. Simple rule - Animals that don't adapt, don't survive. Management senerios have to change with the herd, the habitat and the desired land use. By the time Joe insurance salesman or Betty housewife realizes that there is a problem - it is to late to do anything that doesn't involve drastic measures.

The wolf does not belong where people with children and livestock live.
The American hunter is the best way to control the population and add revenue to the public coffers.

Been there...elk are everywhere. Every other golf course has geese, they have elk bedded down on every hole. I'm not normally a fan of culling but this has gotten out of hand.

Seems the most logical to me too.

Send them to Upstate NY. I'll help with my labor and chip in for the gas.

What a waste of a perfectly good animal.

Predator control is one thing but no predators thats a bad thing. i dont care if its elk deer or geese if you dont want them there dont put the things they like on your property. livestock thats always a hot topic any animal that asumes livestock as prey must be shot!
