Shouldn't have gotten up this morning....

This has really been a rough day, went to the farm to work on a couple of tree stands and take the dogs out. Tried going up an embankment with the 4 wheeler....too steep....front came up and landed on top of me pinching my little finger between the handle bars and a tree.....tore the entire last finger joint off to the bone, blood squirting out all over. Tied off the finger to stop bleeding. Got the 4 wheeler back up, found the finger tip in the leaves, threw it in my pocket and headed back to get to a hospital. About an 1 hour drive....got stopped for driving 90 in a 55 zone. Got out to explain why I was speeding, the LEO saw the finger missing and had me follow him to the nearest Firestation, (no ticket), EMT's bandaged it up and put the detached piece on ice....made it to the hospital only to sit for about 3 hours before going into surgery. Ended up amputating the end of the finger, just too much damage.....shouldn't have got out of bed this morning...now Mrs Rembrandt doesn't trust me to go hunting on my own anymore.....gonna make computer key board work a little slow for a while.

Rembrandt...I am sorry to hear about your accident. I hope our fearless Smoking Jacket Club leader isn't out of commission for long. If your wife won't let you hunt alone, take me with you! If there is a silver lining to this cloud, at least it wasn't your trigger finger.J

Dang Rembrandt, sorry to hear it! Remember my dad telling me he was having a great day right up until my uncle (his brother) shot him trying to fix the safety on his Mauser on opening day. I was only six it happened, but his limp lasted the rest of his life. He also never went hunting with his brother again.Hope you heal quick!I've got eight extra fingers for typing, I can only use two at a time.

Idsman, I'm still planning on you coming down for deer season. That should meet Mrs Rembrandt's new requirements for hunting.Deheffley, thanks for the offer of the eight extra fingers, if it would improve my typing skills....I'd probably take you up on it.Biggest problem is that it shortend up my nose pick'n finger.....no pain yet, but I'm sure it will be throbing tonight when the medication wears off.

Rembrandt -- Could you email me the dates and what kind of permit I need? My email account got too full and they started deleting my messages randomly. I apologize but will be sure to save the details to my hard drive this time.Jeremyidsman75@peoplepc.com

Rembrandt, sorry to hear about the mishap. I'm glad a brother was able to lend a hand with your finger (hey, I made a funny) and no ticket! Whata guy, haha. Get well soon and back to the woods, whatever they are. Here in NJ, the whole state is either paved or built upon. No trees, no guns, no life. By the way, glad you finished all those great painting before your accident.

Rembrandt,Sorry to hear of your injury, but you do know it's probably not your fault. Was there a warning label on the four-wheeler advising you of the risks of attempting to ride uphill?I'm sure the four-wheeler manufacture has advertisments showing their product being used in the manner you attempted to use it; they induced you to your action which has resulted in your injury! You need a good attorney...infact I suggest we concerned citizens start an organization to ban these dangerous four-wheelers...I'll be contacting my Federal and State representatives today, relating your horrible accident, and encouraging them to ban these tools of destruction and protect others from a similiar fate!

Reminds me of a Simpsons episode I saw last night where Homer cuts off his thumb. To get to the hospital he hitches a ride with the slack-jawed yokel and stops for a beer or two at Moe's Tavern.Really, sorry to hear about you finger, but you are part of the club, now. I cut off the tip of my trigger finger (NO!!!!!) when I was a kid. It looks more like a claw than a finger now.

Saxon, afraid the bear story wouldn't carry much credibility in Iowa....maybe a wild snorting bull....Competenone, maybe this qualifies me for "victim" status? Could be a Federal aid program for people with last joint of the little finger missing....might even be a support group to join.Rosie, I still have all the "Important parts".....don't want to think about that senario....Went to work today, a little awkward with the keyboard, good thing it wasn't my trigger finger....should be healed up enough by deer hunting season. Thanks

Rem,Guess this means you can be using those handicapped parking spaces now!Seriously: you didn't mention if it was your dominant hand or not? If it's your dominant hand, you'll probably be surprised by the loss in activities you were not even aware you were using all your fingers in. (Are you still going to be able to give the Smoking Jacket Club's secret handshake?)

I'm right handed, this happened to my left hand...hummm?...handicap parking permit?, been a few times that would have come in handy..... Actually the pain isn't any worse than the times I've hit my thumb with a hammer. Doc gave me some medication to ease it a little.

Rem - Very sorry to hear about the injury. Know two quadripelgics (spell check me, Lowrider) from the same cause who will never hunt again; I'm glad - very glad - the number didn't increase over the weekend.

Rem....Very sorry to hear of your accident. Hope the finger soon heals for you. I've been out of action lately myself with broken fingers in my hand. Just got the cast off and am hoping I'll be able to regain my strength to grip my pistol. Have missed two high powered rifle league shoots because of it. Still don't know how it will affect my pistol shooting. On another note though.....this accident clearly shows the inherent danger of operating one of those 4Wheelers. We should consider registering all 4Wheelers because innocent people could be killed by careless operation of these dangerous weapons....think about if a child or Sara Brady had been between you and the tree...Can you imagine the suffering you would have caused her family???? I truly think we should march on Washington to protest these vehicles and their proliferation in our society and how they are causing so much sorrow to our society.....Oh Jesus I just woke up...I think I was having a bad dream. Sorry to hear about your accident. Maybe you can qualify as a "yakuza" now. Traumatic amputation of the pinky is an entry ritual. Now you won't need those magazines with the finger extension anymore!

The best thing about that day was being able to tell us about it. You survived. Having a quad come over on top of you could have been tragic. Terrible thing, losing the end of a finger. Not the trigger finger at least. Hope you're feeling better.

They say the little toe is key to a persons balance while walking....not sure what function the pinky finger serves other than nose pick'n and ear scratch'n. Thanks everyone for the kind thoughts, I do appreciate it. I'm finding out there are a lot of folks with missing extremities. I feel very fortunate that it wasn't worse. Should heal up just fine. Shouldn't affect bow or gun deer hunting this year....

Rembrandt,I feelyour pain. About four years ago I was fishing in Alaska, and this coastal grizzley decided he needed the salmon on my line more than I did, but he missed and got my leg about half way to the knee. So now I use a custom after-market leg and foot to walk on. Or.... was it a shark when I was scuba diving that took my leg? Can't remember which it was, but both make a good story seeing as how I've never been to Alaska or scuba diving. You will always feel the end of your finger, even years from now. Mine is so bad I have to take medication to keep the sensation down. It feels like it is asleep most of the time and just tingles, but sometimes I get real bad muscle cramps in the part of the leg that is gone. Then it takes hydrocodone to stop the cramps. I don't think you will have anything near that type of feelings, but you will still be able to feel it. And if it starts itching, scratch it where the finger used to be. It will stop the itch. I'm not kidding.

The bandages are off now, looks much better than the day it happened. Stitches come out this next week. Your right about the "falling asleep" sensation....continually seem to be shaking my hand to get feeling back. Pretty stiff, but can still bend it....Doesn't look like it will be much good for a nose picker anymore (heehee) Thanks again for all your kind thoughts.....now I need to look for some handguards for the 4 wheeler.
