Capitol Hill-AP -- The Red Cross is defending a special fund it created to help people following the September eleventh attacks. It has come under fire for not giving the families and victims of the attacks enough of the 564 (m) million dollars that was raised.Controversy over the fund led to the resignation of Red Cross president Bernadine Healy. So far the Liberty Fund has given out 121 (m) million dollars in direct cash payments to families and victims of the attacks. It spent six (m) million dollars on administrative costs. It will use another 50 (m) million to set up a strategic blood reserve.Almost 15 (m) million more will be used on things like brochures on anthrax and mental health counseling nationwide for children. The Red Cross also plans to set aside more than 250 (m) million dollars to pay for more general items resulting from terrorism once the needs of the attack victims and their families are met.

According to a statement they gave Bill O'Reilly, only 20% of the money donated for the disaster relief fund will actually be used for disaster relief. The remaining 80% will be used wherever the Red Cross sees fit.The fact that the Red Cross took the donations from people who wanted the money to go to disaster relief evidently means nothing.Have I told you about my latest sure-fire, can't lose, get-rich-quick pyramid scheme?Send $1000 to me and the other 19 people on the list and within 3 months you'll be a millionaire.Hey! Trust me.

A goodly portion will go into the international fund which supports the "RED CRESCENT" which is the Red Crosses Moslem counterpart. Do not be surprised if it goes for food, medical, and shelter for the Taliban. Al Quada and ole Binny himself!Knowing the RC it will be for a price naturally.

I worked for the RC in one of their blood banks. I enjoyed the work and the interaction with the people who donated blood. Top notch people for the most part. Then we got in some administrators that didn't like the predominant religion in the area and decided to show them up. They also found that they could bolster their bottom line by sending most of the donated blood to areas where they could charge a higher price per unit of DONATED blood (called a processing fee, re-imbursable by insurance) to the point that all the local hospitals were screaming for blood and having to import blood from other areas, driving up the cost to the patients. So, most of the hospitals just started their own blood programs and within a few very short years the RC suspended blood operations here. They have recently re-started them, but not nearly on the scale they were before they decided to show the locals who was boss. I don't donate to them for this and a variety of reasons among which is the way they treated the employees. I don't like unions and would personally never join one, but after working for the RC I almost did, but went and found another job instead.
