I just picked up a Remington PSS .308 ,26 brl and want to top it off with a Leupold scope. It will be used for bench shooting out to about 300yards.?/ Is there a big difference between the Vari-X II and the Vari -X III that justifies the price increase??/ What power or model would you recommend for what it will be used for?Money is not an issue, but do not want more scope than I need. Thanks, Ron

Ron I can help with part of it. The Vari-X II is fully coated, that is there is a single coating on all air to glass surfaces which reduces reflection and increases light transmission. The V-X III is fully multi-coated, meaning each glass to air surface has several coatings with different properties to further reduce reflection and better increase light transmission. This can be very important in hunting where shots are often made in the first or last few minutes of light and legal shooting. Whether that is a big advantage in bench shooting or not you would know better. Can't offer advice on scope power as I am not a bench shooter.

You should be happy with the 4.5x-14x Vari-X III Leupold if you just HAVE to have Leupold. Might want to consider the Shepherd 6x-18x...

my brother mounted a leupold m8 mark4 sniper scope with the mark 4 rings on his PSS. the scope is a fixed 10 power with a mil dot recticle and a .308 cam for bullet compensation out to 100 meters I think. I am sure someone else can tell you about them. I know he gave about $1000 for the scope and rings used. I have saw him hit steel targets out to 600 yards with it.
I spent all my money on guns, women, and beer. The rest I just wasted.wiredog70@hotmail.com

Ron, I currently have a Leupold vari-xIII 4.5-14x40 AO (tactical) mounted on a modified PSS. Although my PSS is far from stock, the scope still works excellently. Since you will be shooting from a bench rest, the raised knobs will work great for you. And the adjustable objectives are a great plus when shooting farther than 100yds. But honestly, if you are not planning to shoot varmint with it, a 3.5-10 will be enough. When it comes down to it, just how close do you want to be to whatever youre aiming for? Dont be carried away by the bigger is better sales pitch because its all in your ability to outshoot your rifle, not your scope.good luck-smooth

Operative word is "KISS". Keep It Simple Shooter.Leupold(overpriced/overrated) info: Fully Coated: VXII Yes VXIII Yes (all lens)Layers: VXII-1 VXIII-4 (MultiCoat)Lght Trans: VXII@82% VXIII@90-92%Extra lens VXII-No VXIII-Yes sharper imageAdj.Type: VXII-Friction VXIII-Click(steel)Ranging: VXII-Not Good VXIII-Yes built inBench Shtg: VXII-Not Great VXIII-Very Good What do you think?KISS...Need an Adjustable Objective, or you won't see as well without one...!!!KISS...Fixed power image sharper compared toLeupold VXIII.KISS...Fixed power adjustments & tracking generally more accurate than VXIII.Kiss...use target/benchrest knobs/adj mn'ts.KISS...don't use any Redfield style(adj rear base). Subject to movement.KISS...1/8", 0r 1/4" dot can help.KISS...Get a sunshade. Sharpens image.Distances your shooting at don't really require "techno-reticles". You will be making a 'drop chart' for your ammo & distances. You easily can log the adjustments using the dials, and clicks. Now, for the "fly in the oinment". Try looking a the Burris Signature model if you want a mid-magnification scope. It adjusts & tracks more accurately, and in comparing resolution(sharpness) it is better than a VXIII. Some models have a patented built in "Light Collector" that does what a sunshade does, but without the extended tube. Many LR shooters I do business with have been amazed by Burris. I do sell Shepherd, and six other high quality scopes(no cheapies allowed), I would recommend that you follow "KISS", and especially the post that recommended you work at outshooting your rifle. Too much $$$ is spent on big overpriced, advertised names, not enough attention is paid to knowledge & skill. IMHO.

Thanks for the advice.. I like the KISS idea.We have a factory shoot out here once a year where all the big name firearm reps come out and show their latest stuff. Optics was a big thing last year. You get to shoot anything they bring and for one day only and for cash only they sell items for way under wholesale prices.Great fun. Hope to buy a scope their this weekend, and God only knows what else.
