Zimbabwe Tyrant to Be Honored by NYC Black & Latino Caucus

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is due to be feted in New York City Hall by the City Council's Black and Latino Caucus

This is the same Robert Mugabe who Time magazine once said responded to an outburst of bloody unrest in Matabeleland by sending in "a brigade of his notorious North Korean-trained troops - mostly from his own Shona tribe - who went on a two-year rampage, torturing and killing thousands of civilians."

The same Robert Mugabe who unleashed so-called veterans of the guerrilla war against the nation's white Rhodesian regime in a murderous campaign against Zimbabwe's white farmers, the nation's source of food in a starvation-wracked country - the same Robert Mugabe whose controversial land-seizure programs, the Post reported, have drawn the ire of the world.

Mugabe is expected to attend the United Nations General Assembly earlier in the day, and incredibly, will be the guest of honor at a reception hosted by members of the City Council's black and Latino caucus.

The Post notes that Mugabe has sought to seize about 90 percent of the country's fertile farmlands currently occupied by whites and hand it over to landless blacks.

Some 2,900 white farmers, many who have lived in Zimbabwe for generations and gave up their citizenship in European nations, were ordered to leave their properties a month ago.

Earlier this year, international observers claimed elections in Zimbabwe were filled with irregularities and that voters in areas opposed to Mugabe were prevented from voting.

Several NYC council members are expected to visit Zimbabwe next month on a "fact-finding" trip at the invitation of the Mugabe government, according to the Post.

Despite the threat of violence in Zimbabwe, many of the white farmers have refused to leave their land, and about 300 have been arrested and charged.

Mugabe has told world leaders at the World Summit on Sustainable Development that no white farmer would be left without land and that only those who owned more than one farm were being asked to give up their property.
