Christmas Ideas

I'm not going for the longest post but the bit of Christmas shopping that I got done today gave me the idea. If you've done any shopping or if you already have it all planned out (and if your loved ones don't read this) let's all throw out our gift ideas. Okay, I have an ulterior motive. I'm stuck with what to buy a grandmother that has absolutely everything.Mom&Dad: Taurus Titanium .38, schnazzy coffee maker with "wake up" brewing timer.Brother: "Enemy At the Gates" on DVD, "About Face" by COL (Ret) David Hackworth and a nice sweaterPretty Girl down in GA who is swinging me a new Hoyt bow: Gift Certificate to Eddie BauerGrandma: ????????? (No. She'd never pick up a gun and would have much less interest in shooting one)

I'm not sure yet about the rest of my family, but I got my wife her big gift already. She's been bugging me for a new bed for the past 6 months or so, so when we saw one in the style we liked for 50% off, I bought it on the spot. When I say 50% off, I mean that the * was $1,900 before the discount. I've got no problem spending $1,000 on a good firearm, but spending that money on a BED made me sick to my tummy. She was thrilled beyond belief though, so it was worth it!Now I know how SHE feels when I come home with long boxes marked "Benelli"!As for the rest of the family, it'll probably be DVD's and books.

Idsman, unfortunately I never had the problem of buying for a grandparent, but two suggestions. If you will be near her during the holidays, a dinner & show with her grandson. If she lives in a cool climate, a PolarFleece vest - circulation degrades as one grows older. Realize perception of 'cool' varies by region. Have vivid memories of what 'sweater weather' means to a Texan - hot summer day in NH!

How about a gift certificate to a store, a show and dinner is a great gift if you live near her. Does she have any hobbies? Any favorite foods?

My wife told me that I am getting her a gift certificate to a shopping mall and then taking her there to spend it. And a day at a spa. My Grandmother should expect a new phone with answering machine. Her phone isn't the greatest, and she is never home when I call.My mother would appreciate a few tickets to see the "Lord of the Rings" movie. I just got her the whole set of books for her birthday, and she loved it.My father, as of today, has a subscription to "Gun World" magazine.Sister: don't know yet.Sisters children: don't know yet.

EATF- you will probably derive more benefit from the bed than she does from the long boxes marked Benelli!

I might give my wife the day off from cooking and cleaning on Christmas Day, but since Christmas falls on a Tuesday she's still on the hook to wash and wax my Jeep.

Usually money for the older children. I used to make wooden toys for my grandchildren, but I ran out of the toys that I knew how to make such as cane- whistles, bamboozlers, dancin-doozies, whirleywhizzers, jumping-jacks, 3 shot rubber-guns, marble-puzzles,basketball free-throw games, exploding penny-banks, and can-jo's. Also they all got too big to appreciate and play with toys. up until then I was almost as important to themas one of ole Santa's elves at christmas time.

Wife: Darn, still haven't came up with anything.Son: New Dean 5 string bass and an amp he's been bugging me about.Daughter: Sending her to Germany for the Summer with her friends. Self: Note to self, spend less on kids next year so self gets something.Sisters: Something if they're lucky. Maybe a gift certificate, yeah, that's it!Brother in laws: Craftsman section at Sears, some sort of new fangled hand tool they always come up with.Sister in laws: don't care what the wife gets them as long as I don't have to shop with her.Father/Motherinlaw: A shiny new police scanner they've been whining about. Back to the Wife: still nothing, darn, could mean trouble. Oh well been there before, and I'll go there again. Jewelry always seems to get me off the hook.

blah???...BLAH!!!!anyway with that out of the way, you know this without any thought, iconoclast was right. grandmothers are pretty much all in the same class, when it comes to gifts; they would rather share some time with you, even if it's just drinking coffee, than for you to blow some exeuberant amount of dough on a present. i know with your work time is kind of on the limited side, so pick up something sentimental and go share an evening with her. -FERG(it's cold in kosovo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Idsman, You should be greatful you still have grandparents to worry about buying things for. I wish I had this problem, but if I can offer up any advice, it's TIME. What your grandmother would really like is for you to spend some TIME with her. Make a point to take her out to dinner. Treat her to a day with you, and do what ever she wishes. Just be there for her. I wish now I could go back and do this with my grandmother, whom I took to much for granted.Take care buddy, and head my advice.LT. W.......
