?4LEO DANO

Read all the previous posts about "adreniline rush", Joey Chitwood, etc. Serious question. I saw this once as I drove past a site where the LEO's had arrested a suspect and I've seen this method used on some of the cop shows on the tube. Bad guy is on the ground, face down and handcuffed. Why is it necessary for LEO to stand over the suspect with LEO's foot planted on suspect's neck? Bad PR to say the least. If suspect is still unruly, why not put him/her in the back of the police car?Just curious.

Was not concerned about badguy's being embarassed. Was concerned about civilians like me not understanding if what I was seeing was S.O.P. and if so, OK, or if the boot-on-the-neck might be misconstrued as an abuse of authority.

A boot on the back of the neck keeps the subject from trying to get up until you are ready for him to get up. It is about control.

That may be, but while living in Oklahoma I saw a guy, whose only crime was speeding through a radar trap, thrown to the ground by two OHP officers and a foot placed hard on the side of his head. The two cops laughed while the guy screamed in pain as his face was pushed into the scorching-hot mid-day Oklahoma asphalt. Those cops needed the *-whipping of their lives and their own faces pressed into the asphalt.I took the license numbers of their patrol cars and reported it to the nearest OHP office. The sergeant I talked to couldn't have cared less.I suppose the guy was lucky they just didn't shoot him. That was another of their favorite things to do back in the eighties when I lived down there.

Lowrider-You didn't say how you knew everything this guy had done to end up on the pavement. Is there more to the story or was this your assumption? Also, there are always a minimum of two sides to every story-sometimes more.

He went through a radar trap at 60mph in a 45mph zone. After he was stopped the OHP officers said they had him at 75mph. He told them they were nuts and that's when they started kicking his *. When they were done with their fun they wrote him a ticket for 60mph and let him drive away. How do I know? I was riding with him.He refused to report it for fear of retaliation. I reported it for him. Did no good at all.

Dano: What I wrote is exactly what happened. I was there. I know the facts. I couldn't believe what I was witnessing. The cops were completely out of control. The driver of the car mouthed-off to them pretty good but didn't swear at them and damn sure didn't deserve what they did to him. That's why I'm not offended at your doubt about my story. I was there and didn't believe it myself. I was told to stay in the car or the cops would have reason to "fear for their lives." Translation: I'd be shot. I wasn't really friends with the guy, like you suggested. He was just somebody I was sharing rides with for a couple of weeks to a remote construction site.During the three years I lived in Oklahoma, '82, '83 & '84, there were several people shot by the OHP and the Garfield County Sheriffs Dept. under very suspect circumstances. The cops were caught-up in lies about the shootings, even lies under oath, and it was just swept under the rug. You'd have had to lived there to appreciate the way things were. The cops, like I said, were out of control. That stuff still goes on down south in the small towns and the backwater counties. They make their own rules and deal severely with people who cross them.Don't get me wrong. I'm not anti-cop. I work for the city where I live and am friends with all the guys on the local force. I'm also a longtime friend of the County Sheriff. I've told this story several times to my cop friends and they are all astounded. All, that is, exept the one who grew-up in Alabama. He knows exactly what I'm talking about and told me I was probably lucky they didn't shoot us both. You'd have had to see it to believe it.The guy who they beat up was a born-and-raised Okie and that's why he wouldn't report the incident. He knew better. He told me that if he caused any trouble they'd stop him some night and that'd be the last anybody ever saw of him.Anyway, it was another of life's unforgettable experiences.

Nunley has obviously never seen a properly handcuffed subject:Get up from a prone position without help.Run like a deer.Deliver devastating kicks.Step through arms to put cuffs in front.Head butt.I could remember more stuff, but it is still early.

OK guys (especially lowrider), I too am born and raised Okie. You are giving us a bad name here. Oklahoma has some of the best cops in the nation. Of course we have had our share of problems, as has every state, but overall Oklahoma cops are very professional. The small towns are probably a little more prone to corruption than the larger cities are. Maybe it has to do with some of their forces being run by only a few people. I have never really had a problem with a cop and I've been pulled over more than a dozen times in the 19 years I've been driving. BTW lowrider, I've got a low rider myself. '01FXDLH.

So you're stopped for speeding. Keep your big mouth shut and treat the LEO with respect. If you must mouth off anything that follows is your own f***ing fault and you deserve it. That LEO puts his life in danger every day and he does NOT have to put up with any bs from some loud mouth sphincter.I stand behind all LEO's 100%.

BADBOYBOB- I must disagree with you. Sure there are rude and stupid people who the cops have to deal with, but I do not think a rude traffic stop warrants some of the things mentioned in the above posts. You said, something to the effect, "if you mouth off to a cop, you get what you deserve". Sorry, but I think a cop should be a little bit above exacting some sort of physical vengence on a wise mouth moron.

And if you REALLY want to irk the guy doing the cussing....SMILE politely and tell them to have a real nice day as you hand them the ticket, if they deserve it.And all of the decent police officers hates the jerks and abusers in our line of work.

My experience, as someone who has been warned six times for speeding and never ticketed is that the more respectful you are, the less likely you are to get a ticket. My experience has been to start the conversation with "Good evening, Officer, how are you doing." From there admit your wrongdoing. If they ask if you know how fast you were going, ADMIT IT; don't come off as both a leadfoot and unattentive. My experience has been that LEO's tend to give you as much grief as you give them, so be nice, take your lumps if you deserve them, and above all be respectful to the people who put their lives on the line to protect you.
