Canadian Gun Control Fiasco

This subject has come up already, but I wanted to add some thoughts from this morning's paper. On the subject of Canada's "Gun control scheme" ... members of Parliament say it is a failure. The program began about six years ago, and they are now asking for even more money. Originally, I'm told it was budgeted to cost $60 million dollars and the paper now says that it started at $85 million ... this was bumped up to $120 million ... and with the new money they are asking at this time, the total will be up to $684 million!Looks to me like thinking people all over the place are saying, "It is a waste, cut your losses and pull the plug ASAP."In the article Saskatchewan MP, Garry Breitkreuz says "the program has cost at least $685 million dollars with no valuable police information."The whole ideas was to help fight crime and reduce crime and violence in Canada, but the facts are clear, that inspite of its phenomenal cost, it has accomplished next to nothing. And maybe it has even hurt, since valuable police man hours have been wasted doing things other than fighting crime, or dealing with terrorist cells and border crossing problems.I am not a wacko gun nut (if such a thing exists), I am a law abiding tax-payer who enjoys some time in the woods hunting and shooting with my family. My card finally came, so now a legally registered gun owner, too. When will we wake up and start doing something right rather than just trying to look like we are adressing the problem or trying to be "politically correct?"Bonne Chasse!

andersk,I'm assuming from your post you're Canadian...I am always curious on gun laws in other countries.1. Are your laws national, or by province, or some other division?2. Can a law abiding Canadian own:a. Semi-auto rifles, if so, can you possess high capacity magazines. Any limitations on models (i.e., can you own a semi auto military style rifle?)b. handguns, if so, high capacity mags?c. Concealed carry- is it lawful, and if so, how easy to get a permit?d. Are target ranges common enough that they are a short drive?Would really be curious to know the answers to these questions.[This message has been edited by ED P (edited 11-06-2001).]

EVERYTHING else is a major problem and tons of red tape. Thanks for asking. (I may have forgotten some of your questions.)Bonne Chasse!

Target ranges around here are club owned. So I am a club member. I don't know if there are all that many. I don't think so. Here in Nouveau-Brunswick you have to be a club member to transport a high powered rifle out of hunting season. And with membership card in pocket, you get to go to the range, shoot it and go straight back home!
